I bought this as a textbook for my class on Educational leadership in graduate school. It has solid information on leadership theory and is authoritative on lots of ideas I had heard referenced before. Very through and worth the money.

Required reading, but didn't learn much

I bought this book for a 300-level college class. However, it seemed like the book just rehashed things I learned from my 100 and 200-level classes. I would expect a more advanced book to increase my knowledge. This book was boring, but if you want a basic understanding of organizational behavior, this book would do the job. I did receive the book quickly and in good condition.

About the Author

Dale Carnegie was an American self-improvement lecturer and author. Born in 1888, Carnegie was the son of a farmer, and worked throughout his childhood helping his parents with various tasks on the farm. He was fortunate, however, in that he was able to obtain an education in his young adulthood at a nearby Teacher s College. Carnegie worked as a salesman and an actor before he took up teaching public speaking courses at a New York YMCA branch, where he was living at the time. Carnegie s public speaking career took off, and through his success he was able to have several of his books published. His first book, Public Speaking: a Practical Course for Business Men sold well, but his most impressive achievement was the publication of his book How to Win Friends and Influence People, which was an immediate bestseller when it was published in 1936, and has gone on to sell millions of copies in thirty-one languages. Carnegie also worked to open the Dale Carnegie Institute, a learning-ground for those interested in his public speaking and self-improvement techniques, and Dale Carnegie courses are still taught today. Carnegie died of Hodgkin s Disease on November 1, 1955.

Uno de Carnegie que no conoc�a y que me gusto much�simo. Este es un libro interesante, lleno de recomendaciones y sugerencias para el d�a a d�a de todas las personas. La vida es un lindo regalo y hay que aprovechar todo lo que la constituye. Estoy muy contento al poseer este libro. Tratar con gente dif�cil y ser amigable en todas las situaciones, entre otros es solo una peque�a muestra de lo que este interesante manual ofrece. El libro es excelente, pero en el apartado que sugiere que no le digamos a la gente que se equivoca no estoy del todo de acuerdo. Desde la alimentaci�n hasta el manejo del stress se comenta en sus paginas. Es excelente lo que el autor presenta para mejorar el burnout o agotamiento laboral. Lo recomiendo completamente.

How to recognize and deal with office politics

I first read this 37 years ago, shortly after accepting my first really professional HR position after college. In my previous position I was stymied by events that took place in my company, and hadn't a clue as to what was really going on.

"Games Mother Never Taught You" gave me insights into corporate politics that were invaluable almost four decades ago, and are just as relevant and critical today. In my 21 years in HR, and in my 20 subsequent years in career coaching and counseling, I've recommended it literally scores of times. And I've recommended it to both men and women, because Ms. Harrigan's insight and advice are applicable to everyone!

"Games Mother Never Taught You" is a superb way to prepare college seniors or recent grads for the kinds of behavior and situations they may find themselves in as they start their corporate careers. Without it, they will probably not know what's going on, and certainly won't know how to handle themselves. This book is a classic, and a gem, which is why it's undoubtedly still in print after 37 years.

For Anyone Who Wants to Undestand Corporate Culture

Written in the 60s, this book still has very contemporary application for anyone unfamiliar with corporate structure. Harrigan explains that the corporate template comes from the military and from professional sports, and women in the 60s didn't understand the rules of those games -- for example, that while you play hard for your team, you don't get emotional about it, because you might be playing on the opposite team some day; and that you can't complain about your boss to his/her boss, because that person HIRED your boss and complaing shows a disregard for hierarchical structure. (Suck it up, or leave). A lot of newcomers to business (male AND female) are still unaway of much of behavior (a lot of i t is counterintuitive), so I often recommend this book to young friends.

First studying this book in the early 1990s, upon my arrival to Tulsa, Oklahoma, it has stood me in good stead, with the information gleaned from its pages. The most recent purchase, was actually as a GIFT to send to my 31-year-old son in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The corporate gamesmanship has changed quite a bit over the years, and now this is actually a valuable book to read also for the YOUNG MEN who are in the corporate workforce today! Remember each office has a "game," the one that is their favorite: football, basketball; tennis; golf. Which offices value "no contact sports" is now compared to the men who come in on Saturday to "work overtime" and spend hours talking about FOOTBALL -- taking over territory! The final analysis is THAT there are also "other games" being played in these offices, which can MAKE OR BREAK a girl's CAREER in a hurry; and NOW the same thing applies to the young MEN of today. READ IT, for valuable ammunition on how to compete successfully, and be accepted in today's OFFICES, being politically correct while NOT giving up one's true personality and sovereignty as an individual.

Unvarnished, But Necessary Counsel

Dr. Thompson, the founder of the Verbal Judo program, has teamed up with Gregory Walker, to comment on the dysfunctional problems found in organizations and they propose some interesting solutions, unique problem solving tactics and effective success strategies. This is a somewhat idiosyncratic commentary on organizational politics, communications and leadership in today's world.

A short book, 180 pages, it is divided into 15 topical chapters that range from the Tao of Leadership to the Art and Gift of Persuasion. The unifying theme is the need for improved leadership built upon honest and effective communication. The book addresses what went wrong, communication styles, principles for supervisory success and approaches to analytical thinking and effectiveness.

With such a broad range of topics in a small book, there is a real risk of skimming the topics and leaving the reader confused. However; the authors skillfully handle the task often referencing their collective experience in the form of brief stories. Their overall approach is certainly less than diplomatic, for example at their discussion of the four levels of expertise, they write:

To allow incompetence a berth in your organization is in itself a sign of incompetence at the highest level of responsibility. It is also a sign of a moral and ethical coward.

While their approach may offend, it does cause the reader to actively engage in the discussion and consider both their primary points and supporting arguments carefully.

Thompson and Walker are skilled teachers and seasoned practitioners, the time you invest reading this book will be enriching. Buy the book, read this book and more importantly put these principles into action.

Kudos to this Verbal Judo addition

Understanding what leadership is all about, the authors shed light on what it takes to develop an excellent workforce -- it takes non-egotistical, steadfast leaders, people who'll put themselves in the background to achieve the greater good! I'm hooked and have read this book twice and am implementing it daily in both my professional and personal life! A perfect supplement to the Verbal Judo way!

Works in my job and in my marriage. Once you start applying the tenets of this book you'll be pleasantly surprised at how much less stress you have and how much easier it is to manage people and get through the day. Makes things a lot easier to deal with, both subordinates and upper management along with the three types of people mentioned in the book.
