About the Author
Raised as an Air Force Brat, I began daydreaming at an early age. I've been writing for my own fun since 5th grade but didn't get really serious about it until 2008. At that time I became sick and needed something to do while I recovered. My daughter said I should write down some of my wild stories. I wanted to leave my grandkids with something special, something of me. I had an idea that had buzzed in my head for a number of years and thought now was a good time to let it out. My hopes were for at least 100 pages. That same story is now 9 books of approx. 120,000 words each. I've racked up over 2 million words in this series alone. It is called The Year of The Change (YA, Sweet Romantic, Fantasy) The first book is in edit at this time. I took a short story, that I was fond of, to try out the deep waters of Amazon. It's called Two Days of a Dream (Sweet Romantic, Fantasy)I launched it in May of 2012 and as of this writing over 33,000 people have it on their Kindle or Cloud. I am Amazed how well its done and how kind everyone has been to me. I have the best readers around. Thank You!

Sweet easy read.
By Amazon Customer
I want to start out by saying that all of the books I read start with 5 stars. I have a great respect for anyone who has written and published anything. It is no easy task.

So that being said let's begin with a review.

First of all, I LOVED the concept. It was a romance but I have yet to come across the idea this story is based around (Don't want to give away any spoilers ;). The charactes were very well written and I felt for both of them. I will admit that a few times I had to roll my eyes or give the female lead a "side eye" >;/ But for the most part I really did like them both. I felt the author did a wonderful job giving background and depth to them that was not excessive, added much to the story, and explained why they made choices they did.

The descriptions of the diffrent areas was also very well done and painted a wonderful picture.

Now all that being said I do have some constructive critisim. Starting with The military jargon.

I am the daughter of a Marine. And I found myself distracted more than once by certain inaccuracies. They are not soldiers, they do not wear fatigues, they would NEVER no matter HOW much they loved and respected him refer to their Captain as Cap. They just wouldn't.

I also had a really hard time with the way Kelly viewed almost every single man she interaccted with. It seemed like all of them were just walking around the base camp ogling her and making her feel uneasy. Were they all just supposed to be skeevy purvy marines? Maybe this was intentional and the author was trying to show Kelly's distrust of all males? Not sure but it didn't really work for me.

I was also kinda disappointed in the rather quick and rushed ending. I do feel there should have been at least an epilogue if not another chapter.

Those three items are the only reason why I gave this 3 stars instead of 4 or 5.

All in all this was a fun read and I will definantly keep an eye out for more from this writer. :)

Needs more research
By moonsgirl
While this was a nice sweet romance, it was very hard to get over the multitude of mistakes. If the author had made the characters ARMY instead of Marines, there would be no problem. With very little internet research, it is possible to find correct military jargon and for anyone who is knowledgeable whatsoever about the Marines this book is more aggravating in its mistakes than it was worth. Marines are NOT soldiers. They do not wear fatigues, they wear cammies. They do NOT say hoo-rah...they say oo-rah (yes, there is a difference). They do not call captains "cap". I could go on and on. I never write reviews and am generally fairly easy to please, especially with free books, but this had too many mistakes to overlook. It is definitely important to do your research if you are going to be writing about something that is widely known in the military community and is fairly simple to check.

I liked it!
By Mari
I really enjoyed reading the book. It has an interesting concept, that a magic gown could take us to our perfect man, and I loved that. The story was well written, has some wonderful characters and I can't wait to read more about the gown. It disappeared right after Kelly went home. Will it be found? Will it match more couples?

SHE COULDN'T CONCENTR ATE ON MAKING LOVE. No matter how tenderly or passionately or intimately Ken touched her, her mind was miles away. It was a little after five on Tuesday afternoon, the time they protected from meetings or dinner with friends or anything else that might interfere with their getting together, and usually Corinne relished the lovemaking with her fianc. Today, though, she wanted to fast-forward to the pillow talk. She had so much to say.

Ken rolled off her with a sigh, and she saw him smile in the late-afternoon light as he rested his hand on her stomach. Did that mean something? Smiling with his hand on her belly? She hoped so but didn't dare ask him. Not yet. Ken loved the afterglow—the slow untangling of their limbs and the gradual return to reality—so she would have to be patient. She stroked her fingers through his thick, ash-blond hair as she waited for his breathing to settle down. Their baby was going to beautiful, no doubt about it.

"Mmm," Ken purred as he nuzzled her shoulder. Thin bands of light slipped into the room through the blinds, leaving luminous stripes on the sheet over his legs. "I love you, Cor."

"I love you, too." She wrapped her arm around him, trying to sense if he was alert enough to listen to her. "I did something amazing today," she began. "Two somethings, actually."

"What did you do?" He sounded interested, if not quite awake.

"First, I took the 540 to work."

His head darted up from his pillow. "You did?"

"Uh-huh."

"How was it?"

"Excellent." She'd had sweaty palms the whole time, but she'd managed. For the past few years, she'd taught fourth grade in a school eight miles from their house, and she'd never once had the courage to take the expressway to get there. She'd stuck to the tiny back roads, curling her way through residential neighborhoods, dodging cars as they backed out of driveways. "It took me about ten minutes to get to work," she said. "It usually takes me forty."

"I'm proud of you," he said. "I know how hard that must have been to do."

"And then I did another amazing thing," she said.

"I haven't forgotten. Two things, you said. What other amazing thing did you do?"

"I went on the field trip to the museum with my class, instead of staying at school like I'd planned."

"Now you're scaring me," he teased. "Are you on some new drug or something?"

"Am I remarkable or what?" she asked.

"You are definitely the most remarkable woman I know." He leaned over to kiss her."You're my brave,beautiful,red-haired girl."

She'd walked inside the museum as though she did it every day of the week, and she bet no one knew that her heart was pounding and her throat felt as though it was tightening around her windpipe. She guarded her phobias carefully. She could never let any of her students' parents—or worse, her fellow teachers—know.

"Maybe you're trying to do too much too fast," Ken said. She shook her head."I'm on a roll," she said."Tomorrow, I plan to step into the elevator at the doctor's office. Just step into it," she added hastily. "I'll take the stairs. But stepping into it will be a first step. So to speak. Then maybe next week, I'll take it up a floor." She shuddered at the thought of the elevator doors closing behind her, locking her in a cubicle not much bigger than a coffin.

"Pretty soon you won't need me anymore."

"I'm always going to need you." She wondered how serious he was with that statement. It was true that she needed Ken in ways most people didn't need a partner. He was the driver anytime they traveled more than a few miles from home. He was her rescuer when she'd have a panic attack in the supermarket, standing in the middle of an aisle with a full cart of groceries. He was the one holding on to her arm as he guided her through the mall or the Concert Hall or wherever they happened to be when her heart started pounding."I would just like to not need you that way. And I have to do this, Ken. I want that job."

She'd been offered a position that would start the following September, training teachers in Wake County to use a reading curriculum in which she'd become expert. That meant driving. A lot of driving. There would be six-lane highways to travel and bridges to cross and elevators she would have no choice but to ride. September was nearly a year away, and she was determined to have her fears mastered by then.

"Kenny."She pulled closer to him, nervous about the topic she was about to broach. "There's something else we really need to talk about."

His muscles tightened ever so slightly beneath her hands. "The pregnancy," he said.

She hated when he called it the pregnancy. She guessed she'd misread his smile earlier. "About the baby," she said. "Right."

He let out a sigh. "Cor, I've thought about it and I just don't think it's the right time. Especially with you starting a new job next year. How much stress do you need?"

"It would work out," she said. "The baby's due in late May. I'd take the end of the year off and have the summer to get used to being a mom and find day care and everything." She smoothed her hand over her stomach. Was it her imagination or was there already a slight slope to her belly? "We've been together so long," she continued. "It just doesn't make sense for me to have an abortion when I'm almost twenty-seven and you're thirty-eight and we can afford to have a child." She didn't say what else she was thinking: Of course, we'd have to get married. Finally. They'd been engaged and living together for four years, and if her pregnancy forced them to set a date, that was fine with her.

He gave her shoulders a squeeze, then sat up. "Let's talk about it later, okay?" he said.

"When?" she asked. "We can't keep putting this off."

"Later tonight," he promised.

She followed his gaze to the phone on the night table. The message light was blinking. He picked up the receiver and punched in their voice-mail code, then listened."Three messages," he said, hitting another button on the phone. The light in the room had grown dim, but she was still able to see him roll his eyes as he listened to the first message.

"Your mother," he said. "She says it's urgent."

"I'm sure." Corinne managed a laugh. Now that Dru had spilled the news of her pregnancy to their parents, she'd probably be getting urgent calls every day. Her mother had already e-mailed her to tell her that redheads were more prone to hemorrhaging after delivery. Thanks a heap, Mom. She hadn't bothered to reply. She hadn't spoken with her mother more than a few times in the past three years.

"There's one from Dru, too," Ken said."She says to call her the minute you get the message."

That was more worrisome. An urgent message from her mother was easy to ignore. From her sister, less so."I hope there's not anything wrong," she said, sitting up.

"They would have called you on your cell if it was so important," he said, still holding the phone to his ear.

"True." She got out of bed and pulled on her short green robe, then picked up her phone from the dresser and turned it on."Except, I didn't have my cell on today because of the field trip, so—"

"What the—" Ken frowned as he listened to another message.

"What the hell are you talking about?" He shouted into the phone. Glancing at his watch, he walked across the room to turn on the television.

"What's going on?" Corinne watched him click through the channels until he reached WIGH, the Raleigh station for which he was a reporter. "That was a message from Darren," he said, as he punched another phone number into the receiver."He's kicking me off the Gleason story."

"What?" She was incredulous. "Why?"

"He said it was for obvious reasons, like I should know what the hell he's talking about." He looked at his watch again and she knew he was waiting for the six-o'clock news. "Come on, come on," he said to the television or the phone—or maybe both."Give me Darren!" he yelled into the receiver. "Well, where is he?" He hung up and started dialing again.

"They can't pull you off that story," she said."That would be so unfair after all the work you've done on it." The Gleason story was his baby. He'd even attracted national attention for it. People were talking about him being a candidate for the Rosedale Award.

"Darren said,'Did you know about this?' like I've been keeping something from him." Ken ran his fingers through his hair. "Oh, don't give me your damn voice mail," he said into the phone.

"Dammit." She felt his impatience as he waited to leave a message.

"What the hell do you mean, I'm off the Gleason story?" he shouted. "Call me!"

He tossed the receiver onto the bed, then pounded the top of the television with his fist as though he could make the news come on sooner through force. "I don't believe this," he said. "When I left the courthouse today, the jury hadn't sentenced him yet and they were supposed to reconvene tomorrow. Maybe I heard it wrong. Maybe I missed the sentencing. Damn!"

Corinne looked down at the cell phone in her hand as she cycled through the list of callers."I have five messages, all from my parents' house," she said. Something was wrong. "I'd better call—"

"Shh," Ken said, turning up the volume as the brassy theme music introduced the news, and anchorman Paul Provost appeared on the screen.

"Good evening, Triangle," Paul said, referring to the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. "Just hours before Timothy Gleason was to be sentenced for the 1977 murder of Genevieve Russell and her unborn child, a shocking revelation shed doubt on his guilt."

"What?" Ken stared at the TV.

Footage of a small arts-and-crafts-style bungalow filled the screen. The roof looked wet from a recent rain, and the trees were lush, the leaves just starting to turn.

"Is that…?" Corinne pressed her hand to her mouth. She knew exactly how the air smelled in the small front yard of the house. It would be thick and sweet with the damp arrival of autumn.

"Oh, my God."

Through the front door, a middle-aged woman limped onto the porch. She looked small and tired. And she looked scared.

"What the hell is going on?" Ken...

Heartbreaking and Courageous Read
By Lizzie McComas
The book started out slow for me. And then it escalated VERY rapidly. It was like a book on steroids.

***SPOILERS***

I found it difficult to believe that a girl would say yes to kidnapping someone for a man she loves (that she only recently had gotten to "know"). I suppose stranger things have happened, though. After the actual kidnapping and when "real life" begins with the baby, that's when the book REALLY captured my attention.

I don't exactly know what it is about the book that is so spellbounding. There's fear, deceit, love, "strangulation", severe phobias, courage, and finally...truth. This book is heartbreaking to me. The beginning made me so angry, but the middle to the end broke my heart completely. It's amazing how you can feel compassion and a sort of understanding for a criminal.

I really recommend this book. I read it all night long because I couldn't put it down. See what it does for you. Like it, love it, or hate it, I think this is the type of book that makes you really think and it stays with you.

LOVABLE BUT FLAWED CHARACTERS....
By Laurel-Rain Snow
CeeCee Wilkes was a vulnerable, sixteen-year-old girl who had lived in foster homes after the death of her mother when she was twelve.

The letters she carried with her, the ones her mother had written to serve as a guide to her as she matured, would be her only touchstone. But nothing in her mother's letters or the life she'd lived could have prepared her for the charming, manipulative Tim Gleason.

The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes begins with a prologue in the present, with a young woman named Corinne, who watches as the woman she knew as her mother confesses a horrendous secret in front of TV cameras.

We then flash back to 1977, and to an event that changed CeeCee's life forever.

In alternating narratives told by Corinne, by CeeCee, and then Eve Elliott, the persona she took on while in hiding, we learn about the fear and vulnerability the young girl faced one terrible night in a remote cabin, and how she spent the next period of her life in hiding. And tried over the years to be the best mother she could be to the baby she "stole" in order to protect her.

What really happened in that remote cabin? What would finally bring the truth out? What price would CeeCee (Eve) have to pay for telling her story? And how would Corinne bury the bitterness and anger she feels in order to reach out to the woman she knew as her mother?

This was a story that spotlighted many issues of morality and choice, and which allows the reader to root for CeeCee despite her wrong choices. I could not stop reading or caring about the characters, flawed though they were. I loved this story and would recommend it for all who enjoy family stories and for those who are fans of Chamberlain. 5.0 stars.

Interesting read
By S. A.
This is an OK book. Reads more like an action movie. It is not a literary sensation.
The book tells the story of a 16-year old Cee Cee Wilkes that gets caught up in unfortunate events and her life changes forever. Later in her life she makes decisions that affect not only her life, but lives of people very close to her. The reader goes through an emotional roller coaster and a love-hate relationship with Cee Cee and several characters in the book. The author introduces concepts and characters that seem to be good in concept but end up in bead actions and it is not always easy to understand why. It is a captivating story ( as someone else suggested , good airplane read) but not a 5 star, because of the following reasons;
-I bought the Kindle version and I have not seen the hard copy, so this might be just the kindle version. But there were a lot of typos that I found odd. I hoped someone would have edited the e-version!
-As clever as the plot is, there are some unanswered questions and confusing parts. Why does Bets make that last decision (I am not telling what, not to spoil the book). That did not make sense at all. How did Corinne develop those phobias? I did not get what the author meant by "over-protection". To me, Cee Cee or Eva did what every mother would have done. Seemed like she was the same loving and caring mother to Dru that she was to Cory. There is perhaps just one reference by the husband to suggest otherwise. The author could have done a better job in explaining Cory's character to the reader. Perhaps a few more pages could have written on Cory's childhood and her relationship with Eva. There are also other questions, like How come the police never became suspicious of Cee Cee who suddenly left the town? -What happened to all those who helped her and she named them all? -How did all those working for SCAPE , who was supposedly a good cause, agree to be tangled in a mess that includes death of another person? And neither them , nor cee cee never question that? and most important of all, it did not make sense at all to put her in charge of what happened in the Cabin. For people who had such a huge plot, it was stupid to put a 16-year old in charge and let her control the outcome of what they had plotted so carefully!

All in all this is an interesting book with an engaging plot. Once you start, it will be hard to put it down, but you have to be prepared to ignore some flaws.

Temptation: Finding Self-Control in an Age of Excess, by Daniel Akst

" This elegantly written and useful book . . . describes how, for millennia, human beings have struggled to rein in desire." -USA Today

At a time when the fallout from reckless spending and unrestrained consumption is fueling a national malaise, Daniel Akst delivers a witty and comprehensive investigation of the central problem of our time: how to save ourselves from what we want. Temptation reminds us that while more calories, sex, and intoxicants are readily available than ever before, crucial social constraints have eroded, creating a world that sorely tests the limits of human willpower. Referencing history, literature, psychology, philosophy, and economics, Akst draws a vivid picture of the many-sided problem of desire-and delivers a blueprint for how we can steer shrewdly away from a campaign of self-destruction.

From Booklist
In a book full of startling facts, this might be the most startling: of the 2.5 million deaths in the U.S. annually, “something approaching half could be prevented . . . if people simply managed to lead healthier lives.” But this isn’t a book about living a healthier lifestyle. It’s an exploration of “the challenge of moderation in the face of freedom and affluence.” The weapons of mass consumption, Akst calls them, are everywhere. We eat too much food, spend too much money, have too much sex. It’s not that we lack willpower; rather, the temptations have vastly multiplied over the years. In the course of defining the reasons why self-control is becoming such a rare commodity, Akst examines our tendency to blame everything except ourselves, citing a woman he met who blamed excess weight on genetics, fast food, advertising, and high-fructose corn syrup—all while polishing off two plates of waffles and cream cheese. It is this kind of willful self-destruction, Akst concludes, that’s killing us in greater and greater numbers. A very thought-provoking and colorfully written book. --David Pitt

Review
"You wouldn't be able to stop yourself from reading this book! Daniel Akst is among the sharpest, most perceptive writers of his generation, and he is in fine form in We Have Met the Enemy."
-Gregg Easterbrook, author of Sonic Boom

"This book entertains even as it pokes at our most sensitive spots. Daniel Akst handles the touchiest heretical ideas with charm, humor and painless scholarship. With no ax to grind, no cause to serve but reason he opens up the foregone conclusions by which we live and leaves a reader with new and alternate views of ourselves and others. Like the finest essayists Akst makes the deepest ideas fascinating and fun to read."
-Nicholas von Hoffman

"The more a society progresses, the bigger a problem self-control turns out to be. If you wish to be ahead of the curve for understanding America's problems, Dan Akst's excellent and informative book is the place to start."
-Tyler Cowen, Professor of Economics, George Mason University, and co-creator of the blog The Marginal Revolution

Pogo Would be Proud
By AdamSmythe
The Pogo comic strip, with its characters set in the Okefenokee Swamp, featured an uncommonly effective and entertaining mixture of sophisticated wit and humor that was enjoyed on different levels by a wide variety of readers over the years. Perhaps Pogo Possum's most well-known line was, "We have met the enemy, and he is us," from which this book sources its title. Appropriately so, I'd say, since the book deals with a number of serious/sophisticated issues, though sometimes in an irreverent way.

In Chapter 2 (out of 21 chapters covering about 275 pages) we're told that about one million Americans die prematurely each year due to behavioral risk factors such as smoking, drinking, being overweight, having high blood pressure and being physically inactive. If you think a lack of self-control is a contributing factor in these instances--as author Daniel Akst does--then maybe it's reasonable to spend some time thinking more in depth about the topic of self-control. In this vein, the book's subtitle, "Self-Control in an Age of Excess," should let you know what to expect.

Some of the author's points are reinforced with interesting examples from modern life. For example, perhaps you haven't heard of the LifeSeat 600. Well, that's a motorized toilet designed to smoothly raise a person of up to 600 pounds to a standing position. (The manufacturer is now working on a LifeSeat 750.) Or, did you know that studies of teenagers show that self-discipline is a better predictor of academic performance than IQ? Issues of self-control being as common as they are (ask Eliot Spitzer, John Edwards, Tiger Woods ... the list could--and does--go on), there is plenty of material for the book to draw upon.

The book does not read like a Puritan lecture, fortunately. Indeed, it acknowledges upfront that self-control is tougher when calorie-rich foods, the Internet, various casinos, and other potential temptations are so readily available nowadays in America. Further, the author addresses the notion that the greater liberties that most (though not all) people now enjoy can lead to greater problems of gambling, addiction, overeating, overspending, etc. Indeed, the subtitle to Chapter 1 ("Liberty is dangerous!" attributed to Albert Camus) succinctly makes that point. And, of course, we're constantly bombarded with advertising, such as, "Resist the temptation to resist the temptation!" (from an ad in a well-known magazine). Then there's the recent financial crisis--now there was another example of a lack of self-control and self-regulation. All told, as the author notes, "self-control has lost some of its traditional stature, at least compared to self-actualization." Think about that for a moment. And it's not all the fault of modern American society, either. The ancient Greeks (also discussed in the book) had their problems, too.

Summarizing, this well-written book seems intended to give support to the notion that a little self-mastery can improve the quality of your life, as well as its quantity. You certainly don't have to be a totally out-of-control individual to gain something from reading the book. Frankly, few of us are without some weaknesses that we'd like better to control. Basically, if the concept of self-control is something you'd like to explore further, then this book deserves your consideration.

Thought-Provoking, Wide-Ranging and Funny
By History Buff
I loved reading this book, for its insights, humor and masterful synthesis of material and ideas.

In "We Have Met the Enemy," Daniel Akst tackles some of the biggest questions of our times, questions that we're often afraid to ask because they require us to think about thorny issues like freedom, willpower, human nature, and how to make sense of many of our social ills: obesity, alcoholism, overspending, etc. The term "personal responsibility" has been hijacked by conservatives over the last few decades, and Akst's topic of self-control unavoidably wades deep into those waters. His politics appear to be an interesting combination of libertarian and liberal. Yet he eschews knee-jerk hysteria and political correctness and instead brings to the discussion a great deal of nuance, thoughtfulness and scientific evidence. He's grappled long and hard with how we as a society can balance freedom with the many temptations it brings.

Somehow he manages to address these issues with a sense of humor that often had me laughing out loud.

Along with the intellectual courage of his arguments, what impressed me most about Akst's book was his astonishing range of references. From Odysseus to 19th century European novelists to Gnarls Barkley, Akst seems to have a voracious appetite for high and low culture, and he weaves it all seamlessly into his writing. In the wrong hands, this might seem pretentious. In this author's hands, it seems totally natural and effortless. The book is a great read -- somehow completely accessible while being intellectually challenging. Highly recommended.

We Do Not Know How Unhappy We Are
By Jeffrey Swystun
Before I get into the purpose and content of Akst's book, let me first say how much I enjoyed his passion and his prose. This is a wonderfully written and timely rant (perhaps a bit overdue - we should have been on this pre-recession). Akst's thesis is the study of "the challenge of moderation in the face of freedom and affluence." It is a book that examines self-control and the challenge of willpower in a world where temptations have evolved and expanded beyond many's ability to manage.

As the author explains, "Yet while temptations have multiplied like fast food outlets in suburbia, the superstructure of external restraint that once helped check our impulses has been weakened by loosening social constraints, the inexorable march of technology, and the same powerfully subversive force - capitalism - that has given us the wherewithal to indulge." Do not fear, the book is not a socialist shout-out - Akst is just providing accurate context: "That we have the chance to get ourselves into so much trouble - with food, drink, money, and one another - is actually a testament to human progress, for what we're talking about here is nothing less than the democratization of temptation."

And we are doing a poor job in controlling ourselves. We are smoking, eating, boozing, and screwing with wild abandon. These activities now account for "more than a million fatalities annually in this country, or close to half of all U.S. deaths." We have a few other problems like conspicuous consumption, living beyond means, all the while filling landfills with discarded crap. Akst's metaphor of a giant buffet stocked with calories, credit, sex, intoxicants is apt and so is our inability to diet and choose wisely.

Some may say that the one flaw in the book is that Akst fails to provide a prescription. He does call for help from family, friends, colleagues and community but admittedly the issues are extensive and so intertwined that any roadmap would come across as a flakey self-help book and this is not that type of book. Its strength is presenting a strong argument for change and putting the onus on each individual reader to be the change they wish to see in the world (to paraphrase Ghandi). The book resonates, provokes thought, and is a call for changes that would have far-reaching benefits for individuals and society as a whole.

Learning from the Patient, by Patrick Casement

Throughout Europe, Patrick Casement's work on the interactional aspects of the therapeutic process is well known and highly acclaimed. In Casement's lucid treatise, LEARNING FROM THE PATIENT, everything in psychoanalytic theory and technique is up for questioning and for careful testing in the clinical setting; every concept used is explained and illustrated with clinical examples. The author offers an unusual openness about what really happens in the consulting room, including mistakes his own as well as others'. The patient's unconscious contribution to analytic work is fully illustrated. As a result of this approach, insight is arrived at with a rare freshness as theory is rediscovered in the consulting room.

Practical clinical wisdom cracked open like a nut
By Elizabeth Renee Blue
My supervisor recommended this book to me and I must say, I was surprised by how excellent it was. First, Casement writes very clearly so its a pleasure to read. The essence of what he writes about is how to listen to a patient, as well as to yourself, so as to understand what impact you are having- or might have- on the person and the treatment. This deceptively simple and reductive statement cannot capture how deeply and extensively he makes use of this skill, so as to transform it into an art. He connects his practice approach to theory, especially to Winnicott's contributions, but the book remains a practical and not a theoretical work. I believe this book transcends theoretical orientation and the recommended way of working can be applied no matter what your orientation is. Many rich case examples bring to life the concepts they illustrate. I admire his honesty and his apparent dedication to plumbing the depths of his own experience in session. But the book is much more than an illustration of a master clinician at work. There is much wisdom to be found in this book and it can be read numerous times to fully absorb and incorporate it. This book goes on my 'desert island' list.

I used this book for a grad program course and it was great. Casement gives tons of examples and his thought process about what he could have done differently in client vingettes. I'm glad this book was assigned for a psychoanalytic course!

Comprehensive and detailed
By madsenmel
This manual is excellent for beginners, due to its thoroughness and wonderful, close-up detailed photos of the tips of the instruments, where most of the differentiation occurs. Also features photos of similar instruments side-by-side, so size differences are more obvious. The only detraction was that some of the names used to identify the instruments were not familiar to me (I only know a Kocher by that name, which is not even given as an alternate name in this book). However, this is a minor, infrequently occurring problem. Overall, the most helpful manual I've found.

Not very helpul in recognizing instruments.
By A Customer
Instrumentation for the Operating Room Photographic Instrumentation manual. Although this manual is very well organized in instrument sets and procedures, the photographs are are unclear in instrument detail. These images should be on a white background and in sharper detail as this is crucial in identifying instruments.

Not useful to me

This book is not useful to an individual starting out in OR trying to learn on their own. Very good pics but no explanation about equipment or how to use it. This would be for a more advanced individual.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples Vol. 3: The Age of Revolution, by Winston S. Churchill

Volume 3 of Winston Churchill’s four-volume sweeping historical account begins with Marlborough’s victorious 1704 campaign at Blenheim in support of William of Orange—and ends with Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo in 1815. Here, Churchill tells the story of how Britain rose to world leadership during the Age of Revolution in the eighteenth century.

Churchill brings his considerable literary talents to bear in recounting events such as the plunging of the South Seas company stock, the Spanish and Austrian Successions, the Treaty of Utrecht, the Seven Years War, and the American and French revolutions with vivid narrative skill. This volume provides a fascinating overview of an extremely volatile period—a must-read for students of British and world history.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sir Winston Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 “for his mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.”
Over a 64-year span, Churchill published over 40 books, many multi-volume definitive accounts of historical events to which he was a witness and participant. All are beautifully written and as accessible and relevant today as when first published.
During his fifty-year political career, Churchill served twice as Prime Minister in addition to other prominent positions—including President of the Board of Trade, First Lord of the Admiralty, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and Home Secretary. In the 1930s, Churchill was one of the first to recognize the danger of the rising Nazi power in Germany and to campaign for rearmament in Britain. His leadership and inspired broadcasts and speeches during World War II helped strengthen British resistance to Adolf Hitler—and played an important part in the Allies’ eventual triumph.
One of the most inspiring wartime leaders of modern history, Churchill was also an orator, a historian, a journalist, and an artist. All of these aspects of Churchill are fully represented in this collection of his works.
ABOUT THE SERIES

Over two decades in the making, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples provides an in-depth look at how history was affected by Britain, America, and English-speaking nations throughout the world—from the time of Julius Caesar’s invasion to the Boer War of 1902.

Midway through the writing of this work, Churchill was called back to government service—ultimately taking the role of Prime Minister during World War II. Once he finally published the work, in the 1950’s, it became a best-seller—receiving excellent reviews not only from the public, but also from professional scholars and academics. It is a work of narrative history that has stood—and will continue to stand—the test of time.

The History of the English as seen by Winston
By Richard C. Geschke
During the 1930's Winston Churchill was enduring his "wilderness years" and was quite prolific in his journalistic efforts. Mr. Churchill began this rather ambitious effort of the history of the English Speaking Peoples in 1937.
This four volume effort wasn't published until the years of 1956-1958. You see Winston had to serve England as Prime Minister from 1939 to 1945. After that he had to write his Nobel Prize winning 6 volume compilation of World War II. During this time Sir Winston was the leader of the Conservative opposition party from 1945 to 1951. After that he again served as Prime Minister until 1955.
Mr. Churchill didn't finish this history of the English Speaking Peoples until he was in his early 80's. One thing about Mr. Churchill, he didn't let any grass grow under his feet.
As a great writer and historian, Mr. Churchill has always had a bias of the English language, laws and its history. Being the master of the English written word, it seems quite right that it was he to write this historical sketch of the English people. Winston goes into great depth of the birth of England and its subsequent development including all the detailed trials and tribulations. He details the narrative of the monarchy into the development of a Democratic form of government.
The rather long history is divided into four books as follows:
1.) The Birth of Britain
2.) The New World
3.) The Age of Revolution
4.) The Great Democracies
Churchill expounds of the development and governance of the British Empire. He also details much of American history, especially the minutiae of the Civil War.
The writing is clear and concise. I think it rather remarkable that these volumes are still relevant today. I took delight in reading Mr. Churchill's last great historical writing. Here's to you Winston. Hear! Hear!!

A Must Read Set
By Edward J. Barton
After completing the four volume set of Churchill's History of the English Speaking Peoples, I was struck by not only how easy and interesting the writing was to pour through, but just how diverse, rich and relatively obscure the general knowledge of our history is. The series takes the reader from the raids by the Romans about 250 BCE to the end of the Boer Wars and the cusp of the First World War in 1905 (which, Churchill would dispute - as he calls out the war with France in the 1740-50 time frame as the first truly world war). Exploring the emergence of constitutional monarchy, the English language and laws, modern political thought, the Reformation, and more than a few deeper dives into military campaigns ranging from Caesar to Nelson to Robert E. Lee and Baden-Powell. Churchill's ability to convey 2000 years of history as "his story" and allow it to be a tale rather than an academic history commend this to a broad range of readers. Surprisingly light, this isn't a quick read, but certainly is approachable by almost any reader with interest. A must read.

Nobel Prize Winner
By J. T. Regenhardt
If you were short changed on your history education, like most of us, this is a must read. This is the kind of reading the can make the casual reader, an avid reader of histories. Most people don't know that Churchill had to write to earn a living. Along with his works on the Duke of Marlborough, The World Crisis (WWI) and his 6 volume work on WWII, this series stands out. I covers a lot of ground and leaves you wanting to read more.
