My husband and I have talked about one of us staying home for a few years but never really knew if we were ready. This little book gives a really great overview of things to consider before you make the leap to being a stay-at-home wife/husband (or mother/father). It's a really quick read which is a bonus if you're trying to read it as a couple. Even though it's really short, it's full of some great advice. I do wish she would've provided more information for some sections; even though she did give other helpful websites/books about financial planning, I think a sample budget (or a few sample budgets across income brackets) would've been useful. I'm just so curious about how people make one income work. Overall I was really pleased with the tips/advice given. My husband & I are still trying to figure out if we can swing a single-income household but this book has really helped to guide our conversations in a more productive direction.

I had already made the leap to becoming a stay at home mom or 'house spouse' when I read this book, but I found the topics covered in the ebook very helpful anyway! The book was easy to read while the content was well thought out including very specific subjects essential to the success of this arrangement. The author suggested several guidelines for communication that my spouse and I had not reviewed before making the decision to resign my position at work outside of the home, so reading this book became a great way to initiate open conversations regarding the issues that surround some of the topics that we had not covered. I highly suggest to anyone considering becoming a ‘house spouse’ that you read this ebook and discuss the pros and cons highlighted in it with your partner.

but I'm always afraid that the publisher will update books published before 1970 by taking out words like the "N" word

I haven't read this book since I was a teenager but I remember loving it. I bought two copies, one for my 10 year old granddaughter & one for me. I could've bought new books, but I'm always afraid that the publisher will update books published before 1970 by taking out words like the "N" word, thereby making the book PC and changing the morals of the period of the book. I wanted to be sure my granddaughter got to read the book in its original form. As for the aesthetics of these books one was in poor to fair condition, the other was in fair to good condition, both were advertised to be in good condition. So, I'm a bit disappointed in their condition. But I'll give my granddaughter the best one, and explain why she's getting a 1943 edition and not a new one.

Great Book and a Great Read

This has been since its first publication an American classic. I have reread it with great enjoyment. This is a wonderful look at real life among the poor, as lived by mainly immigrant families in early 1900's Brooklyn. It doesn't need my recommendation; it has been known for decades to be a fascinating must - read for anyone who enjoys literature about social class and family life in the U. S. But at least I can add my praise for it here.

About the Author
Marisa Anne Pagnattaro is the I.W. Cousins Professor of Business Ethics and a Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor of Legal Studies in the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. She received her Ph.D. in English at the University of Georgia, her J.D. from New York Law School, and her B.A. from Colgate University. Prior to joining the Georgia faculty, Dr. Pagnattaro was a litigation attorney with Kilpatrick & Cody (now known as Kilpatrick Townsend) in Atlanta. Dr. Pagnattaro is the recipient of numerous teaching awards, and she also won the Academy of Legal Studies in Business Charles M. Hewett Master Teacher Competition in 2010. She is the author of many scholarly articles on national and international employment law issues, as well as labor issues related to international trade and the protection of trade secrets in China. She is an active member of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business and is a former Editor in Chief of the American Business Law Journal.

Its Business Law

It is BLAW its not going to be fun or interesting no matter what. The reading is kind of scatter brained and isn't always easy to follow. Best way I learned to retain a chapter was go to the end look at the word glossary for the chapter and then go to the end of the book and read the definitions first then go back and skim through the chapter.

It's still a classic -- excellent games, and is accesible to players of average ...

"My 60 Memorable Games" is the second or third one among my very early chessbook purchases. It's still a classic -- excellent games, and is accesible to players of average or higher chess strength. There's plenty of analysis, without drowning the reader in endless variations. Also, Fischer included many of his own thoughts he had while playing these games, revealing what he was thinking of feeling during the game. Also, Fischer actually included three of games he lost, and overall showed himself to be honest with us and also with himself, throught the book.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to just about every chessplayer, as an interesting, honest account of one of the all-time greatest chessplayers.

A great look at how Fischer moved and thought during his games. I picked up some valuable pointers just within the first ten pages. A worthwhile read for chess players at any level. I've been playing for 55 years. I highly recommend this book.

The Greatest Chess Mind thoughts on his games!

I have had his book since it was first published! This is great because it is in modern notation and it is a true version of Bobby Fischer's notation on his games. He wrote this during his break from Chess just before he came back in 1970 and crushed everybody in his way to becoming World Champion. That is what you are getting, his honest chess thoughts on this favourite games and what he was thinking during the games. You will keep learning from this book all the way form beginner until you become a Grandmaster, for I have met many and they all call this book a classic and one they still read and study and learn from even today. So for us less than Grandmaster or Master level chess players we will definately learn a lot from studying this book and using Botvinnik's method make believe you are playing one side and spend two hours on each game writing down your annotations and then comparing them with Bobby's notes. I would also advise using your favourite chess engine to analyze the games with, I use Rybka and StockFish with Deep Fritz and it helps in making me understand any moves played, annotations or moves I would make that aren't mentioned and I can see the chessic reason why for all of the above! I notice that when I do this his games and notes become part of my chess knowledge and I see more when I play my own games using new found chess lessons I am getting from Bobby Fischer! My only regret is he never wrote another book to cover his games form 1970 to 1972 but Kasparov did that for us and others have too! I hope this helps you learn from the genius Bobby Fischer World Champion!

Finally!

Arthur Conan Doyle's allusion to a 'giant rat" in THE SUSSEX VAMPIRE has driven many modern author's to attempt to fabricate what they thought the story of the giant rat could have been. Unfortunately (as many reviews on here will prove) many have tried and missed the mark but FINALLY someone (in my opinion) has created a pastiche for this title that embodies the memory of Sherlock and Conan Doyle. I'm not going to go into a description because there is one above in the Product area but suffice it to say the book has mystery, suspense, adventure and everything that makes a good Holmes story, BUT the author executes it very well, the story line, which is very good, could easily have been ruined by poor story-telling (as some have in the past)but everything just came together for me and I can't see any reason why someone who purchases and reads this book cover to cover would be disappointed.

Wonderful recreation of Holmes/Watson

I thoroughly enjoyed this tale, and feels it does justice to Doyle's legacy. Makes frequent references to old Sherlock Holmes, including Hound of the Baskervilles. The story hinges, like a lot of Doyle's stories, on some rather improbable coincidences, but that didn't bother me. The author's resolution of the mystery of exactly what the Giant Rat of Sumatra was I think was very satisfying. The story moves well, and I think he recreates the voice of Watson well.

A tail of madness!

I want to say---I've read ALOT of pastiches over the years. Some of these have ranged from very good(Dust and Shadow, Lindsay Faye) to okay(Mary Russell series) This pastiche ties with Dust and Shadow for my favorite of all time.

First off, the author gets the characters and the Victorian vibe RIGHT which matters a lot. I love when Sherlock Holmes has to explain things to me. And he had to explain a lot here because there were many things going on at once. Also, he has Watson's voice down pat, never taking him out of character. In fact, I can hear him speaking in my head, along with Holmes, and I never had reason to think anyone was acting terribly out of character.

The case revolves around a giant, murderous rat smuggled aboard the Matilda Briggs ship. This is actually mentioned in canon, though sadly never written about because "the world was not prepared." The secondary case is a kidnapping that really engages the reader's interest. I wasn't disapointed at all in the ending!

I've read many pastiches but I truly enjoyed this one. I'm going to continue looking for the rest of the volumes in the Furhter Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. I thought this book may be cheesy at first but it really captured the Holmes canon well.
