Grab for the Bar

Whether they believe in them or not, most people are aware of newspaper horoscopes and Sun sign astrology guides. If asked what sign they are born under, most people will say they are an Aries, a Libra, or a Scorpio, for example. But only a fortunate few delve into the mandalic art of astrology to the point that they learn about astrological aspects (geometric angles between planets) and astrological transits (the movements of planets through time and the aspects they make when doing so, and how to interpret these meaningfully). The high bar of understanding that typically exists between the Sun sign level of astrology and the level at which a reader can understand astrological aspects and transits and put these to good use has just gotten easier to reach, thanks to this engaging and accessible work by April Elliott Kent.

First off, this book passes the feel test, essential for any book one is going to get to know. My senses are pleased as I pick up the book and thumb through it. The eye-catching colors of the cover create a draw to what may be an esoteric subject for some. The dimensions are large enough for a coffee table book, and possibly flat shelf storage is best. However, the book lends itself perfectly well to curling up on the sofa or in an armchair to read. I know because I've done it, and others will want to do so, too.

Turning to the meat of the volume, accessible in both paper and electronic versions, we find what will likely become a classic work on astrological transits. Each chapter is highly engaging, including practical examples of public figures that have experienced specific outer planet transits and what occurred in their lives when they did. Who can resist knowing how J.K. Rowling went from rags to riches? Or how Oprah Winfrey overcame her unique struggles to establish herself as one of the world's most admired women? Kent details with the depth of a long-time astrological practitioner the nature of the cycles experienced by these public figures, and what we can learn from them. She includes grounding information on the length of planetary cycles we all may experience and when we can expect these to recur. Chapter 16 on Transits in Action is a particularly potent review of the astrological transits for actor Michael J. Fox, which sheds light on Kent's efficient yet thorough approach to chart evaluation.

Though we regrettably cannot predict we will wind up in the same fortunate positions as major celebrities, we gain the valuable awareness through Kent's Chapter 2, Understanding Planetary Cycles, that we can use planetary cycles to plan or prepare for our lives by day, month, year, and beyond, and how to do so. By learning when the tide is likely to be in or out, we can make the best use of the short-term and long-term astrological transits that circulate through our lives.

Though engaging for any reader who picks it up, this book will best suit those with some knowledge of the meanings of planets in signs and houses, who want to take those symbolic understandings to the next level. Computers and smart phones are a boon to astrologers and would-be astrologers everywhere, but don't skip Kent's suggestion to use an ephemeris to locate planetary positions and hand draw the planetary positions of your natal chart at least once; it may be one of the best meditative exercises you ever do, for yourself and for understanding the charts of others.

Planetary transits, since they are made up of moving geometric angles, can take years of study to grasp and interpret. But these moving objects are truly the moving heart of astrological study, from which the biggest moments of understanding arise. Readers will want to read this book through at least once thoroughly, which they can do with pleasure and intrigue. Then they will want to keep it handy to return to again and again for useful insights when specific astrological transits come along.

Excellent New Astrology Book!

As a professional astrologer I'm always looking for good books to recommend to clients. Astrological Transits: The Beginner's Guide to Using Planetary Cycles... is without a doubt a great book for beginners to learn about the transits, but as I read through it, I realized there is so much more in the pages of this great book than the title suggests.
Kent writes with humor, charm, intelligence and insight on the transits, creating a book that has a lot to offer experienced astrologer's as well as beginner's.
Even though I have been studying astrology for over 25 years and doing professional readings for over ten, I received new insights from reading this book that were an unexpected gift. One of the things I most appreciate about Kent's perspective is that while it doesn't sugarcoat the transits, it also doesn't leave you feeling like the more difficult planetary shifts are going to be all "doom and gloom". Kent writes with such a warm, funny and yet somehow comforting voice that it makes you feel like somehow, despite the inevitable ups and downs that are part of life and that are mirrored by the planetary movements, everything is really going to be ok.
One of my most favorite lines from the book illustrates her approach, "Every astrologer's favorite keyword for Pluto seems to be "transformation." But I consider that a euphemism, a consolation prize for enduring Pluto's transits. "Oh it'll be great. You'll be transformed!" But who among us asks the universe for transformation? We want money and sex and acclaim!" So true! Both from the side of the counselling astrologer and the human being. Reading this I laughed out loud in recognition of my own desire to try and sweeten the always intense effects of the Pluto transits for myself and my clients.
I also particularly loved how Kent used personal stories from her life and the lives of famous people to illustrate the possibilities for how certain transits might play out. These stories make the planets come alive and also showcase the many creative ways that the same transits can manifest differently for different people.
Astrological Transits is now on my Top 10 List of Favorite Astrology Books and I will be recommending to clients and friends alike!

JAMES LAM is widely recognized as the first ever Chief Risk Officer and a pioneer in the field of enterprise risk management. Second Edition of a Seminal Work in Enterprise Risk Management

When the first edition of “Enterprise Risk Management; from Incentives to Controls” appeared in 2003, it seemed as if the business world – at least in the U.S. - was in disarray. The bankruptcy of Enron in 2001, the collapse of WorldCom in 2002, the shutdown of Arthur Anderson – the auditor of both companies - and the arrests of the senior management of Tyco were resonating in the marketplace. Risk management, previously something that might have been considered an accounting specialty, now demanded the attention of senior managers and their corporate boards.

It had gotten to the point that even if board members and management might have been inclined to continue to hand off their risk-oversight responsibilities, the Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002 wasn’t going to let them; and their outside auditors, the ones surviving after the vaporization of Arthur Andersen, were insisting that management take accountability so that no more scandals would crop up on their watches. Management was facing a risk-management learning curve and they needed guidance if they were to begin to make informed risk decisions across their organizations.

It was into this environment that James Lam published his book, “Enterprise Risk Management; from Incentives to Controls” and it was a business best seller. It introduced the background and concepts that were wanting for most managers and the boards they answered to. In his book, Lam gave risk a business context, advanced a risk-management framework applied to business and then drilled down into the three principal forms of business risk: credit risk, market risk, and operational risk - all the while supporting his approach with references to real-life examples and case studies.

Among the many valuable insights the author delivered in that first edition was the concept of the risk portfolio in which risks are treated like investments or assets. He showed how a portfolio of risks can recast the perspective and thus the approaches available to management. Grouped into a portfolio, some risks will likely offset each other and minimize aggregate risk, while others will correlate and amplify aggregate risk, and still others will offer opportunities for increased return on investment. The message was simple. Risks can be managed. And further, not all risks are bad because, in business, without risk there is no reward.

In the second edition of his book, James Lam has built on the first edition starting with an expanded index, a bibliography, and an entirely new section, “ERM Implementation”. In the new section he addresses the practical implications of establishing an ERM program, from implementation to management to decision making to reporting, and includes a Risk Assessment Self-Evaluation List to help direct the effort. The new section rounds out the ERM story. Now all the most compelling questions, what should we do and how should we do it, are addressed in a single volume.

But there are numerous other updates in this second edition to consider as well. They include the expansion of chapters, notably those on Line Management, Stakeholder Management, and Operational Risk Management, and the addition of new case studies including Ford and Airbus and Boeing. Furthermore, I can’t think of anywhere else you will find a better explanation of risk appetite, a term frequently employed by ERM practitioners but rarely if ever adequately explained. And that is not to overlook the inclusion of one of the best explanatory definitions of risk and enterprise risk management that you will find (see page 53).

To my mind, “Enterprise Risk Management; from Incentives to Controls” remains the single best source of information for managers on every level and for board members contemplating risk management on an enterprise-wide scale. Up until the 21st century, risk might have been left to the finance department or managed heuristically, but the collapse in 2001 and 2002 of high-profile businesses that stood at the time for a new age of innovation led to demands for new accountability.

The first edition of James Lam’s book arrived with impeccable timing and helped to lay the groundwork for risk management as a business practice, and the second edition has improved on the first. It is not a theoretical book. With its timely updates and additions and a new section on implementation, this book has made risk and risk management something that can be assimilated and practiced in any business in any industry worldwide.

A Masterpiece, Distilled from Lifelong Insights and Wisdom

This is a must read for anyone who is either in the risk management profession or intends to learn the state of the art of enterprise risk management. Personally, I own both the 1st Edition (released in 2003) and this updated 2nd Edition.

As a risk management executive in the finance industry with 10+ years of experience, I truly appreciate the accessibleness, depth, and comprehensiveness of this book. James Lam is the renowned first ever Chief Risk Officer and a visionary leader in the industry. After reading the book several times, I really appreciate the insightfulness and the wisdom distilled from life-long experiences of one of the best practitioners in the field.

I started my career on “science” side of enterprise risk management, such as pricing financial derivatives, modeling consumer behavior, etc. As I rose from silo-based quantitative risk management to general enterprise-wide risk management, this book (1st Edition) offered a priceless introduction to the area of risk integration and aggregation, the impact of corporate risk management culture, etc. Over the last few years, I’ve become more appreciative of the “art” side of risk management discussed in the book. Even extremely experienced executives in the risk management field can still receive great benefit and insights by reading it.

In summary, this is a must read for anyone who is interested in enterprise risk management, from MBA students to quantitative analysts to experienced corporate executives.

Excellent, Accessible Resource

A decade ago I elected this book by James Lam as a textbook for an ERM course because it is both practicable and readable. During these ten years, the world of ERM has dramatically changed; we needed a new edition of the book, so it’s great that this has been published!

The pages have increased from 336 pages in the 1st edition to 496 pages in the 2nd edition; concrete evidence that a substantial amount of new content been added into the new edition which reflects new developments in ERM theory and practice of the past 10 years. For example, there are more case studies from various industries and an entirely new section---Section Five on “ERM Implementation.” In Section Five, James Lam clearly presents how to implement an ERM program based on his 30 years of experience in ERM, including board risk oversight, risk assessment, risk-based decision-making and dashboard reporting.
Since this book is state-of-the-art, practicable and readable, I strongly recommend it to anyone who is interested in ERM and especially MBA and EMBA students.

WE CAN SAVE OURSELVES FROM BRAIN DISEASES!

This book is a breakthrough in information that will help us all prevent, treat and even reverse not only Alzheimer's disease but other neurodegenerative diseases as well - Parkinson's, Huntington's, MS etc. It is filled with information about studies that have been done with diet, exercise, the use of coconut oil's medium chain triglycerides etc., turning on its head such long-standing beliefs like saturated fat is bad for you and cholesterol should always be lowered if high, etc. It's sugar and simple carbohydrates (white bread, pasta etc.) that are literally killing us - we need to accept it so we can live longer, healthier lives. Some of this information has been known for decades - many medical professionals did not study nutrition and may not have the time to follow-up on new findings, simply believing what they are told by the pharmaceutical companies, who are making a killing on the incorrect information they perpetuate. Take heed if you or any of your family or friends are suffering from these diseases - you CAN do something about it! In addition, in May 2017, Dr. Dale Bredesen is coming out with a book and documentary that carries this information even further. His book is titled "The End of Alzheimer's" !!! It is available on Amazon at a reasonable pre-order price. If you don't want to be one of those people who just keeps their head in the sand and misses out on some of the biggest news in decades - take action and read "Stop Alzheimer's Now" by Bruce Fife, N.D. and Dr. Bredesen's book, scheduled for availability in May 2017.

A must Read if you are over 45

There is much excellent information but I found the book slow reading in spots. Read pages 255-6 first, then read Appendix C "drugs seniors should avoid" and the Forward by Dr. Russell Blaylock MD. You are now ready to plow through the book. I believe that a good Scientific Editor could improve the experience.
The Ketogenic Diet can work short term (4-5 weeks) but it may be advisable to gradually add in non-starchy carbohydrates to bring your total up to 100 grams/day after an induction phase. My experience was that after a month, my body translated the low carbohydrate intake (even with unlimited Fat and Protein) as starvation and jacked up the cortisol, which caused my blood pressure to spike, so monitor your blood pressure daily. Keep your protein MODERATE (not unlimited), Supplement with a couple of B-100s/day, 15 grams of D-Ribose/day, a digestive enzyme with meals, a good daily Probiotic and add the minerals GTF Chromium, .Vanadium, Selenium, and iodine to Fife's Supplement recommendations.

Get this book to stay healthy!

This is a well-written book about neurological degeneration as manifested in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinston's disease, ALS, and more. From what I read each of these diseases takes place in different parts of the brain thus there are the different symptoms manifested. The first five or more chapters deal with causes of these diseases. I was quite surprised by some of the causes. The next chapters deal with what can be done now to lessen the effects of the disease, prolong a person's life, or maybe eliminate the disease. There are 25 pages of footnotes from medical journals and research papers in small print which shows the basis for making statements in the book. Alzheimer's is referred to as third-stage diabetes in this book with information to support that reference. This is a readable book, but you won't read it in one night. Burt Carney, a former high school science teacher.

You need to attend a class, cannot use this book solely

This is the 2015 version of the book, 8th Edition.
What is the difference from last edition, 7th edition? What I noticed are different numbers in the questions: same question, but instead of 3cm, it can be 2cm now. Other than that, no noticeable amendment. If you have a class which need to use this book for homework question, I strongly recommend you buy it. (The right edition as your class required)
Generally, it has 4-5 pages for the theory, and about 3-4 simple examples. Most of the parts are questions, which are much harder than the examples.

Pros:
The pictures in this book are printed well, which are easy to read, and they help you understand the questions. It is convenient to have equations and theory at the beginning of each section. The book is organized which helps you build knowledge from section to section.

Cons:
This book does not have enough expression in each chapter. There are not much examples to cover the whole idea in the chapter. You will still notice "What can I do in this question" situation even you read through all examples in the chapter. If you read this book hoping to learn everything about statics, it's not working. Instead, it acts like a supplementary to lecture notes.

A contributor to Mad, 22-year-old Rich is a Harvard senior, a former president of the Harvard Lampoon and the son of New York Times columnist Frank Rich. Half of the short humor pieces collected here previously appeared in the Harvard Lampoon, and Rich has taken his college collage and mixed it with new material for a satirical salmagundi that bites back. Since brevity is the soul of wit, the book has 57 varieties of playlets, essays and mirthful monologues, and most are only two pages long. Imaginative premises abound, such as X Files with dog characters. In the title piece, ants plot an escape: "We've been digging tunnels ever since we got here. We always end up hitting glass." Since a college-level audience is targeted, older readers might find some references puzzling. In his original proposal to Random House (a portion of which was printed in the New York Observer), he claimed that the "subject matter—horrible, inescapable doom—is well-suited for a younger audience.... I think kids will be attracted to the book's unpredictability. The tone remains constant throughout, but the topic changes every page with the abruptness of an iPod shuffle." True, these fragments are fun, and some are so abrupt they could have been iPhoned in. Others are as unpredictable as YouTube, as in your face as MySpace (which will both surely be used for online promotions). (Apr. 3)

In this collection of comic vignettes, Rich, a Harvard senior and former president of the I^ Harvard Lampoon, displays a knack for extracting humor from scenarios of discomfort and despair. There's the son who unwittingly exposes his single mother's promiscuity, the nerd who becomes cool in the eyes of his Bulgarian pen pal, and the factory employee who goes a little nuts on the job. Performance anxiety among pandas, small talk gone wrong, the validity of "love coupons" when a relationship goes bad--all are covered here. Readers also learn about unlikely applications of math. (Who knew solving a trigonometry problem could mitigate a murderer's wrath?) And on the liabilities of being invisible, Rich writes: "When I was a lifeguard, I never got any credit for any of my heroic rescues. It was always 'angel this' and 'angel that.'" Some of the selections are more dark than droll (a boy's discovery of his father's alcohol cache, the text message of a teenager with hepatitis C), but all have the same good-natured goal: finding levity amid the gravity of everyday life. Funny, if a little uneven

This is a very short but very funny collection of imagined scenes by a former Harvard Lampoon writer. These whimsical bits range from Abraham's awkwardly quiet ride back to town with Isaac (who he almost just sacrificed), to the reaction of kids who are told for the first time that there are actually machines for computing the math problems they've been tortured figuring out by hand all these years, to ants trying one last time to dig that tunnel that'll get them out of the farm (I know this is our eighth attempt and we keep hitting glass, but I have a good feeling about this one!). Some are better than others, but none take more than sixty seconds to read. I can think of much worse ways to spend my minutes.
