Enough, but poorly illustrated

This book needs some more illustration. Some of the techniques are difficult to understand just with words, and illustrations would be etremely helpful.

This Program Can Revolutionize Your Relationship!

fine early eighteenth century high seas adventure romance

In 1721 Felicity Kendell lives a pious prim life overcoming a youthful indiscretion. She dresses in black and always turns to the Lord for guidance as any good Puritan should. However, her sense of adventure remains strong so she sails to Barbados to visit her father Benjamin, whom she had not seen in a few years.
Instead of a warm reunion, her father defiles the Lord asking why Felicity is not in Boston. Soon she meets his partners who have no Yankee ethics with the worst being the exasperating but gorgeous Lord Christian Andrews representing all the passion she has given up. She sneaks on Drew's ship to prove he is cruel, but instead finds a kind hearted individual bringing out the passion she buried.
Fans of early eighteenth high seas adventure romances will want to join the vast crew for the ride. The story line is fast-paced going at knots that usually means lack of characterizations, but Cheryl Howe also insures readers understand the motives of her lead protagonists. The myriad of secondary cast members is a solid supporting group though the extremes make some of the villains into abusive cartoon figures. Still fans will enjoy THE PIRATE AND THE PURITAN, just wear your life preserver and seat belt as this novel is moving.

Great Pirate Read!

I love Pirate and sea going historicals. But even I know they all pretty much run along the same theme. So I was pleasantly surprise to read Cheryl Howe's The Pirate and The Puritan! The title jumps out of you and it doesn't stop there. The book itself is one of those you do not wish to put down till it is done. Felicity and Drew take us on one great voyage. Both characters are strong and endearing at the same time. This author is some one to watch!

Silly Pirate Romance

I liked the book. This was offered for free, so I can't complain about the price. I was up for a pirate fantasy, and this one was good! Both the male character and female character were strong and independent. They both new what they wanted and went for it (although it took a few chapters to build up the tension between the two). The ending added some pirate butt kicking with a happily ever after ending - which suited me well. If you were looking for a pirate romance, you'll like his book.

Francine Johnston is Associate Professor in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she teaches reading, language arts, and children’s literature.  A former first-grade teacher and reading specialist.

 

Donald Bear is director of the E. L. Cord Foundation Center for Learning and Literacy where he and preservice, Master’s and doctoral students teach and assess children who struggle to learn to read and write. Donald is a professor in the Department of Educational Specialties in the College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno. Donald has been a classroom teacher and he researches and writes about literacy development and instruction. He is an author of numerous articles, book chapters, and books, including Words Their Way ®, Words Their Way ® with English Learners, and Vocabulary Their Way.

My problem with the book is the publisher, but ...

My problem with the book is the publisher, but Amazon needs to be aware of the problem. This book has an online component. The online information was not accessible due to a faulty access code given at the back of the book. After 2 hours on the phone with Pearson, the publishers would not honor the purchase of the book and give me a correct code because Amazon was a third party purchase.

Not work my time and money.

Overly complicated and the CD's only work on certain computers. I have two running the same OS and the CD's only worked on one of them. I'm sure it's great and worth the time for a large class but for a home schooler of 1 child it's not. I would save your money and just download the evaluation pages for free from any number of sitests and then use that to decided what workbook to use. Also the suggested sorting and games can be found freely on many homeschooling blogs.

Not all that deluxe

I have to preface my review with a caveat: Black's is indispensible and if you're reading this, you need it. Also, I haven't looked through it extensively and so don't purport to rate this edition over the last one, just this deluxe version.

Having said that, I can't recommend this particular version with cheap-ish vinyl/leatherette cover and thumb indexing.

I just bought this deluxe version a few days ago for my sister who is going to enter law school in the fall. I decided that though the regular 7th version has served me well, she deserves the best. While this is surely the best, it is certainly not worth $40+ more than the regular version.

I feel like this $100 book will look like a pretty weak stand-alone present for her now that I've taken a close look at it; it's just a little underwhelming.

The cover, whatever it is, looks a little cheap and scratches and indents very easily. It already looks used and did not come sealed.

The binding and overall workmanship seems to be on par with the regular edition I looked at (and the one I own), which is to say mediocre.

The thumb indexing is a plus, and I guess that some people could desire that option enough to warrant the higher price.

Also, the paper is of noticeably higher quality, more like a nice library quality Webster's than a regular book. But I never noticed that the paper in my previous edition was lacking until Barrister Books told me.

The only other noteworthy thing about this particular version is the double take the cashier did when the price came up.

Really, I don't think you can justify that jump in price, if they could do something special for an additional $40-50 (i.e. leather, better binding, jewel encrusted carrying case) it would be worth looking into. There is a deluxe edition in a slipcase for $30 more, but there is no picture of it online and my school's bookstore didn't stock it and I'm sure it is the same book otherwise.

Al in all, a great reference with a marginal upgrade.

Black's Law is essential, but which version?

For current or future law students Black's Law Dictionary is an essential reference book for your library, and as one of my professors told me, "if you don't want an abridged education, don't buy the abridged version." You'll also gain access to an online version of Black's through any Westlaw account, but it's one version behind, and the UI isn't as easy to navigate. I think the hardcover dictionary is worth the money. Finally, a word about the Deluxe Edition: no. I can't see paying almost double for what it offers. My advice is to stick with the Standard Edition.
