Stand Out is Outstanding

I read this book in one weekend. As a small business owner, I have found too much hype and not much substance when it comes to online marketing. Mr. Fletcher, cuts through, and clarifies what I need to do, to help promote and grow my business. This easy to read book, is for those of us ready to do something, but don't know how to go about online marketing, Mr. Fletcher gives us our plan, our playbook, to more effectively market our company online. I wish I had found this book, before wasting so much time and money on others.

Impressive and Immediately Useful

There are tons of "Internet Marketing" types of books out there. Stand Out is the only book I have read that I would recommend.

Aaron Fletcher is a marketer, but you can also tell he is about driving the business through measurable systems. He goes much deeper than fancy methods for getting clicks and leads, provides no nonsense advice and guidance on exactly how to Stand Out in a sea of white noise.

Fletcher's foundation of Mindset, Market, Message, Media and Metrics make the whole process simple to follow and implement.

After reading Stand Out, I was finding myself wanting more and knowing that there is more from this author. He is more than a marketer, he is a businessman who realizes that bringing the prospect to your door is just part of the battle... albeit an important part. There is a lot of solid advice that any online marketer or bricks and mortar business can use to not only survive but thrive with a fortified online strategy.

I look forward to Aaron Fletcher's future work and hope to work with him directly one day... soon.

Good start but falls short of the promise of a real marketing plan.

I would say this book is a good start if you are a total novice to websites and very basic SEO. However, the book promises to create a marketing successful marketing plan. It creates a website, some basic SEO, and then content marketing through blogging. Then stops. This is another book created by someone selling a marketing product online and telling you how they are selling it to you. Again it is a good start for a complete novice but don't expect a successful marketing campaign with it.

A Staple in Art Literature

Heinrich W�lfflin’s book is a critical approach to assessing fine art (primarily the Renaissance and Baroque periods), and critical reading for any art student. Being an artist/author myself, I was impressed by his endeavors to make sense out of what many could not see on their own, especially since this was written in the 1920s. W�lfflin’s unique way of categorizing the progression of art from one period to the next was groundbreaking. That’s because he made clear that we should not view “progress” in the sense that later artists were superior to their predecessors. Rather that each artist viewed and created artistic works within the confines of the knowledge available to them in their own time.

Most people are ingrained with the idea that progress is a process of making improvements over time, hence becoming more advanced. That the horse and buggy cart evolved over time to become an automobile is a prime example of progress manifesting a superior vehicle. Yet, in the art world, Heinrich argued, such is not the case.

As an example: W�lfflin’s theory would assert that Rubens cannot be deemed superior to Da Vinci just because he lived in a later era. Each had only the knowledge of their respective times available to them. So where Leonardo had strived for linear perfection, and utilizing linear perspective in ways to heighten the dramatic moment, Rubens, on the other hand, had inherited all that the past had to offer him, and instead focused primarily on using paint to create visions of action, or the subtle nuances of fatty flesh for example.

Hence, adherence to the hard outline gave way to softly blurring edges in a painterly fashion and creating movement. Each master excelled in their profession, yet according to W�lfflin, we cannot say that Rubens was superior to Da Vinci. Each was a master at what they strived to achieve with the resources available to them, and neither had access to advanced knowledge that did not yet exist. As such, an artist’s goals differ from one generation to the next, and in many cases, even from one ethnic group to another. Therefore, both are great artists for their respective times.

And while that concept holds true in most cases, I could easily point out a flaw in W�lfflin’s hypothesis. His strict approach, which although allowing for minor overlaps from one period to the next, overlooked how some artists break free of the constraints of their era, being visionaries that spearhead advances far beyond their time, thus having far greater influence upon their own and future generations. Here again, I will cite Leonardo as a prime example. Leonardo’s “‪Battle of Anghiari” was a mind-boggling masterpiece that shocked the majority of his peers, and, to the world’s loss, never survived. However, it was reproduced by none other than Peter Paul Rubens, who only drew a detailed sketch of one section of this massive fresco.‬

Nevertheless, Da Vinci’s battle scene—which was a ferocious and gnarled assemblage of men and horses fighting in the heat of battle—broke all the restrained and orderly rules of High Renaissance art, and proved to be a prophetic glimpse into a distant future. In essence, Da Vinci’s mind had traversed the ages and brought the future back to this own provincial time. Most uncommon. Likewise, Leonardo’s staggering invention of the sfumato technique was another major milestone in art history, as Da Vinci was already softening the edges of his luminous subjects while all his peers were glued to the hard crisp outline. Hence, once again Leonardo profoundly influenced the following Baroque era and all others that followed, which W�lfflin had at least acknowledged.

As such, we can indeed say that Leonardo was superior to Rubens for making such innovative and far-reaching advances. Da Vinci was endowed with sublime qualities that only a mere handful of humans throughout history ever possessed. As such, there are ultra savants that break all the rules. Therefore, by W�lfflin overlooking such glorious anomalies, or missing them completely, the integrity of his hypothesis begins to falter.

Heinrich sought to eliminate all emotion and concentrate on logic to assess artists and their work, which was a commendable concept. However, he evidently had a deep aversion to making judgments that could elicit even the slightest notion of being called “subjective.” So did W�lfflin view Leonardo’s techniques as subjective? Possibly. Yet, as I pointed out, the criteria used to make my assessments were not based upon mere speculation or personal “subjective” preferences. The facts clearly spoke for themselves. The slight smokey glaze of the Mona Lisa or the twisted battle composition of ‪Anghiari‬ had obviously introduced innovations that no other artist exhibited in Leonardo’s lifetime, yet had clearly influenced future artists. As such, being critical to the subject W�lfflin was treating, and in turn should have been addressed.

Yet don’t let my critique mislead you, on the whole, W�lfflin posited sound criteria for analyzing great artworks and pointing out some of the traits and methods their creators had and utilized, which did fall into basic categories, hence adding clarity and a deeper understanding to each artist and time period. Heinrich offers a great deal to contemplate and investigate, and makes astute observations that enhance one’s perceptiveness and appreciation.

The two main publishing drawbacks, however, were the black & white reproductions of artwork, and the lack of certain pieces of artwork that W�lfflin discussed, which not every reader will know if not an art professional or enthusiast. I was going to give this a 4 star rating for those flaws, but opted not to. There are far too many good points to penalize this work for those reasons. It would have been nice, however, if this Dover edition updated W�lfflin’s scholarly work with color images and not be just a straightforward black & white reproduction of a dated work. Regardless, this is a must-read for anyone who is serious about gaining a greater insight into art and the mysteries of creation. Highly recommended.

Eye opening, in the truest sense of the term

This was one of the most important books in my awakening as a seeing, thinking person. It opened my eyes not only to the underlying concepts of art history, which the book is purportedly about, but also to the central tensions in all avenues of culture that produce change. Brilliant. I didn't agree with the above reviewer that it was a hard read, though -- I can't get through any dense academic texts, and I tore through this like it was a thriller. It helps you not just to see, but to think about what you see.

An important book in art history.

Wolfflin contrasts the styles of the High Renaissance and the Baroque by setting up them up as a system of oppositions. He compares the two time periods according to five sets of categories. He claims that this is what art history should do. In other words, style and not meaning is the criteria according to which art history should be written. A lot is to be learned from this book. However, there are a lot of limitations to Wolfflin's approach. Consequently, it should be read critically or "against the grain" in order to expose some of Wolfflin's biases. Its also a very difficult read. But, its worth it if you get through it.

False Advertising on new version

We were required to purchase this book for our ARNP program. The Fourth Edition was just being launched as our new class was starting and we were told that we could use either book but they were going to teach from the newest edition that was updated to today's ARNP standards. I find this book easy to read and like the format. It gets 3 stars because the authors/publisher offers an on-line free enhanced e-book as an adjunct to the book. The problem is, they launched the new book without having the online program available and they "hope to have it up and running soon". They supposedly have instructor resources available but say they can't give us access to that. They should have posted that so half of my class that chose the "updated" version for our Masters course would have gotten our money's worth. I'm sure they will have it available at some point within the next year or so, but that is not helping those of us who forked over a lot more money to get the new book with the online program. This is false advertising and they should reimburse those of us who paid full price for something we didn't get. Apologies and telling us you hope to have it available soon does nothing for those of us who bought the updated version for the extra support. Do yourself a favor, check with the publisher before you buy the new version, if you are interested in having the online adjunct material. Otherwise it is not worth the extra money. Though the inside front cover states, "Questions, concerns? We are happy to help"... that was not so in this case.. We just got, "we hope to have it up sometime in the near future". Shame on you for false advertisement!!! Be up front with advertising and let potential buyers know that what is offered on your cover is not yet available. When you are a student, every dollar counts! Amazon should know as well, as they are not aware that this book is offering something it can not yet deliver.

Worthless online resource and ebook access not working.

Decent book; however, resources are lacking and tech support for the publisher is a waste of time. I bought this book brand new and I am not able to access any of the online resources that this book provides. The scratch off code was worthless. It's not a heavy book, but when I go to campus I prefer to access the content online. They need to fix this ASAP or at least lower the cost of the book since the online resources are not available.

Update: I have contacted customer service regarding my issue of not having access to the online resource the book offers. Downgraded to 1 star. However, the information provided in the book is good and worthwhile to help you understand the pharmacology aspect.

Update 2: This book contains a lot of typos. In addition, there is plagiarism in some chapters that is word for word taken from another book. WTH!!

Great Textbook But Don't Buy New

This book is great but I bought a new version thinking the link to the interactive material online would work, and it doesn't have any content attached. But last edition used is my advice.

Healing the wounded feeling function

"This book is about our wounded feeling function, probably the most common and painful wound which occurs in our Western world. It is very dangerous when a wound is so common in culture that hardly anyone knows there is a problem." Johnson opens his book with these provocative sentences. The first thing he does is convince the reader that the problem exists, and is of considerable scope. For example, our modern English language is not really adequate for a full description of the problem, having the vague and much abused word "feeling" and only one word, equally vague, for "love". Johnson, a Jungian analyst, explores the problem using myths -- the Fisher King and the Handless Maiden, to demonstrate the wounded feeling function in, respectively, masculinity and femininity. Through the myths, Johnson not only diagnoses the problem, but makes practical suggestions for healing. This wonderful little book, scarcely 100 pages long, can be read in an afternoon, although its insights could change the directions of a life.

A must read, with reservations...

I purchased this book because the Handless Maiden myth resonates for me, my having first been introduced to it through a dream and then through Clarissa Pinkola Estes book 'Women Who Run With Wolves'. I felt I had more to learn from this myth, and Johnson's book put the Handless Maiden myth in a matrix that helped me to understand it more personally, as a metaphor for the feminine in contemporary society. Placing it in a context I could understand so well brought this myth to life, and was the greatest value of this book for me.
The only off-putting thing, which changed it from 5 to 4 stars, is a small thing but which strikes to the heart of the issue. The author apologised in the beginning for perhaps not being able to do justice to the feminine wounding myth as much as the male myth. It was honest and ethical of him to state such concerns, which makes me respect his integrity, but he is alas, correct. As wonderful as his assessment of the Handless Maiden is, he still put a great deal of emphasis on the male value and aspects of it, which he did very little in reverse for the male Fisher King myth. The section in The Handless Maiden where he abandons such careful integrating of the masculine is the section which resonated most for me. I'm not sure why he did this, but if one goes through both chapters and counts instances of other-gender applicability you'll see what I mean. In one paragraph I almost felt like this myth was being ripped from my "hands" and given to the male, a dynamic of the actual myth.
Nevertheless, the author put the myth into a powerful and broad matrix of understanding for contemporary women, something which 'Women Who Run With Wolves', as much as I love it, didn't allow me to see as clearly. What I would suggest is first reading Johnson's book, and saving Clarissa Pinkola Estes interpretation for last, when you can appreciate it more, in all its profound and subtle complexity.

Profound and prescient

I have read this book twice, with many years in between.

In my youth, I thought Robert Johnson understood the myth of the Fisher King exceptionally well, but did not really understand the handless maiden. I attributed this to his gender bias, which he mentions at the beginning. He understands men better than women, from personal experience. I re-read the book again recently. I have been researching sexism, and I now understand things I simply was not aware of before. This time when I read the handless maiden myth, I was astounded. One of the things Robert Johnson talks about are the silver hands the king has made for the maiden. This is a metaphor for technology! And I was previously so enamored of technology that I could not even see the metaphor.

The highlights of the book are Johnson's re-interpretation of foundational mythology.

In the Fisher King, he tells the story of a king who is wounded in his feeling function. In modern terms, we would say he is damaged in his ability to experience emotions -- to relate to other people. He has respite from his pain only when he is fishing, hence the name. He lives in the castle of the holy grail. Direction to the castle are critical: the fisherman tells Parsifal (the youthful hero of the myth) that he should go "just down the road a little way, turn left, cross the drawbridge, and you will be my guest tonight." Johnson interprets these directions for us. "The specific instructions are to go down the road -- whatever road one is involved with at the moment -- turn left, which is to say go toward the unconscious or the world of imagination and fantasy, cross the drawbridge -- the division between our conscious world and the inner world of imagination -- and one will be in the grail castle, the miraculous place of healing." The book Johnson wrote -- all his books in fact -- are verbal guides to this process.

The story of the handless maiden is about a young girl whose hands were cut off as a consequence of her father's unwitting bargain with the devil. In modern terms we would say she is denied agency, just as men are denied emotional connectivity. But the story is so much more than that! A king falls in love with her and marries her. He had silver hands made for her, and these hands are widely admired in court. The silver hands stand for the technology we use as a barrier between ourselves and our deep persona -- specifically that place that is "down the road a little way, turn left, cross the drawbridge". The agency the maiden particularly lacks is the agency to access this process. She, like many modern people, relates more closely to her iPhone than to her companions. Silver-handedness is unbelievably attractive, even addictive. (Johnson wrote this book in 1993, so his illustration of silver-handedness is more mundane: a lavish hotel with silver dinnerware and fawning servants. Johnson would have recognized our current technology as more a more telling example.)

Johnson mentions that Jung was asked "Will we make it?" -- meaning will we survive as a civilization. Jung replied "Only if enough individuals do their inner work."

This book is a part of that inner work.

I love this book. It is a fascinating exploration on teaching medical students the important theory behind the medical interview. By using the Calgary-Cambridge method, with a strong emphasis on relationship-building as well as information-gathering, the book provides an orderly framework on how to teach these skills to medical students.

It does not hurt that it is SO well-written and easy to read.

It is vitally(!) important that the new generations of medica lprofessionals (what are the amatuers?) understand that there is a definite need for people in medicine to be able to communicate withpatients and not simply give them orders . That is one of the things whic has turned the populaton against doctors. Itis the father figure taken to the A. Huxley peridime. This understanding must be coupled with the ability and willingness to education the poplace in the needs and requirements for proper treatment (by the physician and the patient personally). It must be understood that medicin is an "art and gift" and not just a means to an inordinate salary base. I, personally, am very tired of seeing doctor dressed in slax an shoes which wuld pay for my son's 1st year in colege.. I have fire many doctors who take ME for granted because they are already on hemove to the next patient while showing me little patience for my HPI and PMHx. That is one of the reasons that I entered the field of communications for the medical community. Doctors deserve to know how to talk with, as well as, to patients...
