Amazon.com Review
Q & A with John Nussey, author of Arduino for Dummies John Nussey What is the best way for new Arduino users to get started?

I'd say the best way get started with Arduino is to find a workshop near you and see where it takes you. Workshops really accelerate your learning and put you in an environment with like-minded people. I've met all kinds of interesting people through workshops. Sometimes they'll open your eyes to completely new "scenes" that you wouldn't know about otherwise, and other time, you'll find people that might be excited about exactly the same things as you.

What is your all-time favorite Arduino project that you've either worked on or heard about from someone else?

My own favourite project is the Pen Nib Dress that I made with Steven Tai. It's my favourite purely because it's so beautiful to look at. It's maybe a little impractical (weighing about 5 kg. or just over 11 lbs.) for the poor model who had to wear it but that's the way it is with prototypes!

Why do you think Arduino has become such a popular device, especially for tech hobbyists?

Arduino is cheap and easy to use, but I don't think that either of these is the main reason that it's so popular. The community around it is what's so remarkable and this is something that you see on the Arduino forums. If they were entirely populated by one group of people, whether it were artists, designers, programmers, engineers or hobbyists, then it wouldn't work, but there seems to be an excellent ecosystem of people on the forum pages to both ask new and challenging questions as well as to answer them.

How do you think Arduino has influenced interactive design projects?

Arduino has made it possible to quickly and easily get a lot of concepts into the real world. Students can build prototypes that actually work for their final shows and design studios can build the interactive elements of a project themselves without needing an entire technical company to partner with. This allows people to make their ideas a reality, which makes it easier to convey them to a client and also to see if they work the way you expect. I believe that prototyping is an essential process and skill to have in the design industry today and that through this process you will understand more about your project or idea than any number of sketches, renderings or simulations can teach you.

Any advice for someone who may be interested in Arduino, but not sure what it's all about?

Get Googling! It's all out there on the net: talks, workshops, resources, kits, and more. Once you've seen a few other projects, you'll have an idea of what's possible and what's interesting to you, then you can think about your own projects and how Arduino can help you solve a problem or maybe just create something interesting.

What should people expect when they open a copy of Arduino For Dummies?

Arduino For Dummies is written for not-technical people that are interested in learning more about technology. The first part of the book gets you familiar with Arduino and what it involves, then there are some simple examples to teach you the fundamentals that you'll need to know before you go further. Later on there's a bit of inspiration to get you thinking about the kind of projects that you can build, a bit of practical advice to get your prototyping skills up to scratch, and then the book dives into a few more advanced uses to give you an idea of what's possible with this fantastic little board!

Just what I needed!
By Luke & Christina
I'm pretty conservative on giving out 5 stars but I was really excited to get into the Arduino world. Perhaps my excitement makes my review bias, but it's fair to me.

I ordered a starter kit with the Arduino Uno and jumped right into the book that was provided in the kit. The book in the kit is very good as well, as it jump started my installation of everything very smoothly and had me doing a couple sketches (programs) within 15 minutes. The sketches even describe how the code works with the Arduino hardware and that was very helpful. However, it began to get deep fairly quick, so I turned to this book.

I began working with the sketches the book starts with (and which the software has preloaded for you as well) and the "Dummies" part of the title began showing it's face. I'm very new to both the programming language which is based on C and electronics in general, so the holding hands essence of this book was great. It explains to you in great detail what each line of code means and how you can manipulate it to get a feel for the functions.

I'm sure some seasoned electronics guys and girls as well as programmers may find it all redundant, but if you are looking at buying this book, it's probably because you feel like a "Dummie", not because you're really great at this stuff. Highly recommended as a starter! I'm about half way through, but I'm betting I will be hungry for more deeper books and this one will have given me a solid foundation to stand on!

Interested in Arduino? A good book to get.
By Rick
Recommended for those that are curious about what you need to know to use a microprocessor.
Requires you only to be interested.
It has tons of pages with tons of information all covered step by step.
What has to be done, with what and where to find it are all covered.
I also like the author's style of writing. He knows that for you to use Arduino, or any other microprocessor, you have to figure out how to program the device to do what you actually want it to do. Programming (for those of us who were never exposed to it) is like learning to write a strictly logical foreign language. The author gives me hope that it can be done by using a cut and paste, trial and error sort of thing. At least, this is the point of the learning curve where I'm at.
If you have covered the beginning Arduino material out there, or if you haven't even started, check out this book.

The EXAMPLES in the book don't work!!
By techuser
Given this is a book for novices, there are WAY too many errors.

I have the latest version of arduino software. The book gives instructions for configuring the connectors on the arduino and a breadboard and running the arduino script. Unfortunately, the book instructions do not match the arduino code, resulting in the examples not working. The reader, since he/she is a novice, has no idea why the sample doesn't work. Is the arduino broken, is the breadboard not connected properly, is the motor broken, is the software correct? The reader has no clue. We assume that the book is correct and that something is wrong.

The author/publisher needs to provide an update/errata sheet to correct these inexcusable errors!

The Trace Line series, seems to be a really great way to show how to color (outline) many objects that are the subject for the books! From here, you can read up on the insides, to figure out how to do many drawing techniques and how to do them. Its like having an art teacher in your room!

Gorgeous
By Teri Williams
Beautiful flowers to trace and color. But don't think they are easy. Phew I'm trying with colored pencils and guess that's not my forte. Next I'll try water color and acrylic. No matter what they are beautiful pictures to work from and nice clear and clean tracings. Color dots to show you colors used but you can always try different color. I've been trying to learn colored pencils but I stink. Going to try water color and then next acrylic. Wish me luck and I wish you luck too. :-)
BTW Cynthia Knox is and unbelievable color pencil artist who teaches on Craftsy. When I saw the cover of this book I just knew it was her and sure enough it is!

How Technical Analysis Works (New York Institute of Finance), by Bruce Kamich

Since the early 1960s, the number of different investment instruments has multiplied. Currencies now float, and interest rates can fluctuate sharply. Money moves around the globe easily and around the clock. We don’t wait for chart books to come in the mail; we don’t even have the patience to download a file from the Internet. Thousands of people are using technical analysis in some form, but most likely without a good framework in the basics, without a true understanding of what they are doing.

How Technical Analysis Works offers a tested approach to technical analysis. The book is organized in an order that builds comprehension and skills in a logical way to make it easy to understand the subject. It provides investors, traders, and students with a good first book on technical analysis prepared for the twenty-first century.

Regardless of your level of experience and investment knowledge, this is a book you will keep and refer to for years to come. How Technical Analysis Works is the one book that tells you what is important, the book that shows you how technical analysis can be a timing tool, a selection tool, and, most important, a risk management tool.

Adequate but no great shakes
By OnLooker
This is very basic and if you are starting out, it is good intro to TA. However, you won't learn subtle play of these indicators and their limitations in helping you do real trading that is profitable. My advise for neophytes is to start with Steve Nison's "Japanese Candlestick Charting". Grasp the psychological madhouse that markets are and learn to decipher emotions which are controlling the market participants. There is enough of Western TA in that book to give you a clue as to what is essential to learn and what is mostly mathematical wizardry which leaves you more confused and too paralyzed to act. Develop your system by trial and error and do a lot of chart reading - a lot. the history of movement of the stock prices is there for you free of charge to study. Study markets in bull and bear phases, strongly trending and going-nowhere phases, and any old time frame and most unusual time periods in history (try 1987 or 2005). Learn your own psychological make up and your limitations, how much pain can you endure, how greedy you are and of course, how fragile. Mathematically derived indicators can do only so much; people are not mathematical. People are emotional creatures. No mathematician can replace a psychiatrist to evaluate and treat a schizophrenic patient and market players are if nothing else, definitely schizophrenic, including yourself. Learn smart or you will be chewed up and spit out by the markets.

Am very lucky to take Prof.Kamich's course in person. Love books that can question my existing thinking and push me to grow. The book is very concise and informative.

Had to buy an used copy but came brand new except a 2$ pricetag from Goodwill. What a shame that the previous owners didn't recognize the value of this book.

Great book
By Ho Wei Keong
I finally read this book 5 years after buying it. It is a good book for a beginner like me. This is because it has a lot of information but is concise and short. Some books are so long that you struggle to finish reading and could be filled with filler materials but not this. My only issue with this book is the charts. At times, you can hardly relate the text to the chart because of a lack of indicators on the chart. Great book nevertheless.

This first book in the series is designed to introduce the techniques used in digital filmmaking. It is aimed at anyone who has an interest in telling stories with pictures and sound and won't assume any familiarity with equipment or concepts. In addition to the basics of shooting and editing, different story forms will be introduced from documentary and live events through fictional narratives. Each of the topics will be covered in enough depth to allow someone with a camera and a computer to begin creating visual projects they can be proud of. This book is applicable to all novices or as an introduction to digital filmmaking classes. The book should also be a gateway to the series of books designed to impart greater sophistication in all areas of filmmaking.

Digital Filmmaking, An Introduction
By anniemary
As a beginning filmmaker, I think Pete Shaner's book, Digital Filmmaking, is one of the best I have read so far. It covers every aspect of filmmaking, even though I'm not going to sepnd the amount of money it takes to make a professional film. But all the information is there so you have a good idea of what's involved in making a Holleywood production. It gives me, the amatuer, a good idea of how the professionals do it. I highly recommend this book for the overall philosophy of what is important and what is not.

One of the BEST books on this topic!
By Amazon Customer
This is an absolutely FANTASTIC book for those new (and old) to filmmaking and videography. I have been involved with film and video for more than 30 years and I still learned a lot from this book. Some of the topics covered include: writing a story, choosing and using equipment, getting the shot, sound and many other topics. There is also a DVD included with examples of good filmmaking and is discussed and referred to throughout the book. Each topic is covered in depth with lots of explanations of "how" and "why". There are also a lot of good photos and illustrations to go along with topics being discussed. I was looking for a text book to use in my digital art class and this covers pretty much every topic I wanted to teach. I have recommended this to numerous friends and family who are interested in filmmaking. This is a GREAT book and well worth the cost. I would have paid a lot more for it knowing all the information that is included. I would recommend this to those just getting into filmmaking as well as those who already have some experience just because there are so many topics covered. There are other books in this series (Digital Filmmaking Series) and I plan on checking some of them out as well because of the quality of this book. My only complaint is that the book is paperback and not a hardcover because I have read it and flipped through it so often that the cover and spine are in pretty rough shape.

"Have a reason for everything you do" - Shaner Doctrine
By Gerald Everett Jones
Digital Filmmaking: An Introduction is undoubtedly the best 101 textbook covering all the basics of making DV and HD movies. I confess to being prejudiced. I coauthored some other books on the subject with Pete Shaner. He wrote this one on his own, taking everything we did to the next level, and although I commented on the manuscript in draft, this one is entirely his show. The book is full of rules to live by, which, taken together, I call Shaner Doctrine. The paramount rule is to have a reason for everything you do. Since the director's job is primarily to be a decision maker, you'll go a long way if you learn to challenge your reasons. If you don't have a plan, if you don't have a rationale or a theme or a skill set or a clue - it will show up in one way or another on the screen or in the track.

There's a companion DVD with the book. It's better than any number of lectures and only slightly less useful than a hands-on tutorial with Shaner himself. Also, the example movies and lesson clips reinforce the book's chapters and teaching points. Particularly noteworthy as instruction - for lighting design, see "Hollywood Lighting Exposed," for cinematography "Alan Smithee's Hollywood Tips," and for sound design and production, "Microphone Demo."

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of October 2015: Leigh Bardugo is a fascinating storyteller and in her latest book, Six of Crows, she’s stepped up her game even more. At the heart of the novel is Kaz Brekkar, a mysterious young man who has clawed his way to notoriety in a city fueled by corruption and greed. When Kaz is asked to perform an extremely dangerous heist in return for a staggering sum of money, he calls upon his most trusted compatriots to help. The story is told from multiple points of view and readers discover what led each character to Kaz in the first place, as well as his own shocking path. Six of Crows is a vivid, entertaining fantasy that boldly captures the imagination and leaves an impression well after the novel’s cliff-hanger ending. -- Seira Wilson

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Bardugo has created a wildly imaginative story of six young people who have been commissioned to pull off the greatest heist of all time. They are to nab the creator of jurda parem, a highly addictive product that enhances the innate paranormal powers of the Grisha peoples, in the hopes of creating weapons of war that will upset the balance of power and destroy the economies of rival governments. Kaz, the hero of the story and mastermind of the plot, recruits five others to aid in his quest for revenge for the loss of his brother and the promise of vast wealth. Taking what could have been stock characters of young adult fiction—the loner, the rebel, the outcast, and the con artist, the author has fashioned fully fleshed out, dynamic protagonists who will engage and enchant readers. What a thrill it is to return to the world she created with her popular "Grisha Trilogy" (Holt). While the unresolved ending may frustrate some teens, the promise of a sequel will give them hope that this unsettling, captivating, magical journey will continue.—Jane Henriksen Baird, Anchorage Public Library, AK

Sensational, beautifully written, action-packed story about a bunch of criminals who will steal your heart.
By QueenKatieMae
After finishing Leigh Bardugo’s epic series, The Grisha Trilogy, I was sad to see it come to an end because it was so engaging and beautifully written and I knew I would miss the Darkling. Now Bardugo has come out with another series set in the same world, same time as the Grisha but with a whole new set of characters. And you know what? I hate to say this, it might even be considered blasphemy, but I found myself more engaged, more fascinated, more intrigued, and utterly in love with these new characters. And the story? It has more twists and set backs and game changing moments than any book I have ever read. It’s intoxicating and fast-paced and you need to pay attention or you’ll miss Bardugo’s multiple sleight of hand tricks. Nothing is what it seems.

The Grisha Trilogy had the Darkling; mysterious power-hungry megalomaniac that he was, all readers agreed the man was sexy. In this series, we get Kaz; greedy, dangerous, deceptive Bastard of the Barrel that he is, despite all his faults and one very weird but ultimately understandable phobia, the man is criminally sexy. Emphasis on criminal, by the way. He’s the guy you make eye contact with in a dive bar who makes you shiver, but you know that taking him home would be one huge, but memorable, mistake.

Anyway, the story is all about the art of the con and is told from multiple viewpoints, which Bardugo expertly masters. Five con artists, led by Kaz, stand to make enough money to buy them out of whatever debt or indenture or brothel or sorry mess they call life if they pull off a most impossible heist. Keeping all the details of the plan close to his ever-present vest, Kaz hires a spy he calls The Wraith, a sharpshooter with a gambling problem, a Grisha Heartrender, a soldier who wants to kill the Grisha, and a rich kid with a penchant for explosives. Combining their various talents, they intend to break into the world’s most impenetrable prison and kidnap the scientist responsible for the dangerous drug that I’ll just refer to as “Grisha meth”.

If all the main characters in Six of Crows weren’t teenagers, this would definitely read as adult fiction. I never regarded any of them on the same level as the pimply-faced immature high schoolers that run around in my house. All the characters have a hard luck story or monumental event that made them grow up fast. Throughout the book we learn their personal stories, some are incredibly sad and unfair. But, in the end, it’s what made them who they are: interesting, resilient, criminal and ultimately dangerous. Heartbreakers that they are, I fell in love with all of them.

A masterful storyteller and creative writer with a clever sense of humor, Bardugo is one of my favorite authors. As much as I adored The Grisha Trilogy, I absolutely love the dirty and gritty beauty of Six of Crows. And, I need to have the next book soon.

Jesper is a good shot and prone to outbursts
By Kyera
Six of Crows is set in the world of the Grisha trilogy, but with an entirely new cast of characters. As the reader is already familiar with the world it only takes a few chapters to be hooked. The beginning of the book introduces us to the gang who we will accompany on a perilous journey.

Kaz is the mysterious leader with the gaze of a shark. He keeps more secrets than a diary and trusts no one. Kaz is never without his crow's head cane, gloves and willingness to do anything to get the job done. Inej is a wraith, able to make herself unnoticeable and get almost anywhere. She can scale walls, discover secret and have a blade in a man's back before he is any the wiser. Jesper is a good shot and prone to outbursts. He also has a gambling problem that has put him so far in debt that the only way out is to join Kaz on this likely deadly mission. Nina is the resident Grisha and a heartrender, although she must use her skills at times to heal or transform the others. She and Mattais have a history that is never far from either his mind. Mattias is Fjerdan and knows their target, but the only thing keeping him on this journey is the promise of a pardon at the end. Finally, it's Wylan the insurance and the son of the man offering them 30 million kruge to complete the job. He's also good with demolition and bombs, but not enough to warrant his place on the crew.

The mission is impossible or near to it, but they all have their reasons for needing it to succeed. Even though they're crooks, murderers and thieves you want them to succeed. They're strangely likable. All humans with flaws and backstories to show how they became the people they are and why. Leigh Bardugo's characters are wonderfully complex and well-developed. Each person's history is fluidly woven into the story and does not pull the reader out of the narrative or make them wish for a novella to help further flesh out the story or characters.

By the end, you love this misfit gang of hooligans and can't wait to read the stunning conclusion to this duology. Highly recommended to young adult readers who enjoy fantasy with great world building and character development.

A Fantasy That Lives Up To Its Hype
By macbooks95
There was so much hype around this book--and let's be honest, it's so pretty--that I had to pick it up. I didn't read the Grisha trilogy, so for me the first hundred or so pages of this book was a lot of semi-confusing world building that went by quite slowly. I ended up putting it down for a couple months before coming back to it. I'd say that once you get to about two hundred pages the book really picks up and grips you, but I do have to knock a couple points off for that. It shouldn't take half the book for the story to get interesting. Once the plot does pick up, Six of Crows is a real page-turner. The characters are all distinctive, and the changing of the perspectives every chapter works, because they are each so different from one another. I think working with such a large cast of characters is one of the reasons it's slow to start off, though. Introducing a world as well as so many characters can get confusing.
I liked the little relationships between the characters that we saw get fleshed out as the story went on either through flashbacks or getting to know each other better. I think the heist was done well, and was believable. And once you get past the world building everything is very easy to picture and plays out like a movie.
All in all I would recommend this book, but definitely not to someone who isn't generally a big reader. Even though this isn't technically high fantasy it is about as tough to get into, in my opinion.
Side note: if you're having a tough time picturing the characters look up Leigh Bardugo's pinterest, where she has an album of character/clothing inspiration for the book!

Figuring the Sacred: Religion, Narrative and Imagination, by Paul Ricoeur

The thought of Paul Ricoeur continues its profound effect on theology, religious studies, and biblical interpretation. Introduced by Mark Wallace, the twenty-one papers collected in this volume-some familiar, many translated here for the first time-constitute the most comprehensive anthology of Ricoeur's writings in religion since 1970. The writings are thematically divided into five parts: the study of religion philosophers of religion the Bible and genre theological overtures practical theology Ricoeur's hermeneutical orientation and his deep sensitivity to the mystery and power of religious language offer fresh insight into the transformative potential of sacred literature, including the Bible.

Comprehensive Contemporary Theology
By Solon Phillips
Ricoeur's work in the areas of hermeneutics and theology has been invaluable, and the essays contained in this book are particularly poignant and accessible. His work on Memory and Suffering alone make the book an excellent purchase, and every essay attests to the irreducible nature of God, Scripture, and Theology in a way few authors have done. An excellent work.

Narratival Hermeneutics
By Jacob
I am not going to do a chapter by chapter analysis of Figuring the Sacred. Not every chapter was equally good. Some of his musings on Heidegger and Kant were interesting but not germane to narrative theology.

"Philosophy and Religious Language"

"Understanding a text is always something more than the summation of partial meanings; the text as a whole has to be considered as a hierarchy of topics" (Ricoeur 38). This makes me think of chiasms. The structure of a chiasm reinforces meaning. Meaning unfolds from narrative.

"Not just any theology whatsoever can be tied to narrative form, but only a theology that proclaims Yahweh to be the grand actor of a history of deliverance. Without a doubt it is this point that forms the greatest contrast between the God of Israel and the God of Greek Philosophy" (40).

Manifestation and Proclamation

This is the most important essay in the book and the one that causes much offense. Ricoeur opposes a philosophy of manifestation (ontotheology) with a philosophy of proclamation (Yahweh speaks).

Manifestation

The "numinous" element of the sacred has nothing to do with language (49). Another key element is theophany--not moments in the biblical narrative, but anything by which the sacred shows itself (icons, relics, holy places). This means that reality is something other than itself while remaining itself.

There is a correspondence between macrocosm and microcosm (54). This brings to mind the Luciferian "as above, so below" dictum.

Proclamation

There is a rupture--violent in the case of the prophets' war against Baalism--between manifestation and proclamation. The word outweighs the numinous (56). Israel's whole theology--and identity--was formed around discourses.

Per idols and icons: "We may say that within the Hebraic domain they (hierophanies) withdraw to the extent that instruction through Torah overcomes any manifestation through an image. A Theology of the Name is opposed to any hierophany of an idol...Hearing the word has taken the place of vision of signs" (56). God's pesel is the Ten Words. It is the only pesel he commanded.

Communal Readings

In "The 'Sacred' Text and the Community" Ricoeur gives a neat deconstruction of the concept "sacred," especially when applied with a book.

For us, manifestation is not be necessity linked to language. The word 'sacred' belongs to the side of manifestation, not to the side of proclamation, because many things may be sacred without being a text (71)

Ricoeur the Hermeneut

His reading of Genesis 1:1-2:4a is interesting, but more for the method than the conclusions. His essay on the Imagination is quite valuable in showing what "goes on" in a narrative. Many narratives in the Bible, particularly Jesus's parables, employ intertextuality which always forces an expansion of meaning from the text. In other words, it is "an object with surplus value" (152). Assuming that the Holy Spirit didn't write chaotically and randomly, isolated texts are now seen in a pattern and signify something else, something more (161).

Ricoeur then moves to a section on biblical time, which is useful for meditation. He summarizes von Rad, Cullman, and others. I won't belabor the point.

His essay "Interpretive Narrative" offers his famous distinction between "idem" identity (the god of sameness, the god of Greek metaphysics) and ipse identity (the God who is constant to the Covenant). He expands this motif in "Naming God." God's identity is seen in his historic acts.

Conclusion

While magnificent, it is in many ways a difficult read. He assumes a familiarity with Continental Philosophy (itself a daunting task) and even then some essays don't seem to have a point. But when he unloads on narrative he truly delivers.

A philosophical reflection on religious understanding
By G. Fisher
This book is not an easy read. I found it tough sledding in some places. But it's well worth the effort for those who are willing to stick with it. Written by one of the leading philosophers of the 20th century, it uses both analytic and continental philosophy to plumb the depths of religious thought in an attempt to cast light on the connections between religious texts (the word) and spiritual experience (the sacred). At his best, Ricoeur is brilliant in ways that invite us to go deeper into our traditions and to connect our traditions with our personal experience.
