Duane Olson's new textbook uniquely focuses on the central points at issue in contemporary Christian reflection. Olson s clear and concise overview roots contemporary questions firmly in Christian responses to the Enlightenment. This allows Olson to unfold those questions as bequeathed by modernity and to show how the radical reframing of the current period actually builds on the diversity of those lingering concerns.
Olson discusses the range of contemporary opinions, their rationales, and what's at stake. He illustrates these alternate frameworks as they play out in central concerns over the being of God in relation to the universe, how to understand the figure of Christ today, and the distinctively new notions of being human. Olson's text includes reflection and research questions, suggestions for further reading, and a glossary.

Review
"For anyone interested in how Christianity got to where it is today and where it might be going in the future, Duane Olson provides a well-written and compelling roadmap through the labyrinth of competing theological perspectives. Beginning with how the Enlightenment shaped modern consciousness and ending with some of the most intractable comtemporary problems and concerns, Olson offers an account of modern Christianity that shows with admirable clarity the fault lines and tensions in Christian faith today." --Jeffrey C. Pugh, Maude Sharpe Powell Professor of Religious Studies, Elon Univeristy
" to write a broadly accessible book covering all the bases of systematic theology and attending to the problems of the Enlightenment takes more than good intentions -- it takes deep insight and a strong aversion to jargon and non-essentials. Olson shows healthy doses of both in this welcome addition to a valuable series." --Derek R. Nelson, Associate Professor of Religion, Thiel College

A Unique Contribution to Understanding Contemporary Christian Theology
By Brenda B
Olson's main concern in this text is to show how broad changes in Western culture and intellectual history over the past several hundred years have raised important questions to which contemporary Christian thinkers have responded in a variety of creative ways. While there are some evaluative judgments made at times in the text, overall, the text intends to be informative about an array of options rather than arguing for a single theological position. While denominational distinctiveness is mentioned at times, the focus of the text is not denominational. The focus is broader and differently tinged, examining how contemporary Christian thinking across various denominational lines articulates and seeks to justify itself in the face of modern questions. The tone of the text is broadly sympathetic and even appreciative of the creativity expressed in developments in contemporary theology.
What is perhaps most surprising about the text is its comprehensiveness. Olson situates the modern context and the changes and challenges it brings within the framework of the development of classical Christian doctrines. In the first five chapters, explaining this framework includes such topics as the impact of Greek thinking on the Christian idea of God, the devleopment of the two-nature Christology in Christian history, and the classical Christian view of eschatology. Among other things, the overview of contemporary Christian theology includes Barth and Tillich on knowing God, human language for God and the analogy of being, liberation theology, existentialist theology, the theology of hope, John Hick's Irenaean theodicy, and process theology.
Each of the final four chapters of the book are devoted to surveying Christian responses to a pressing cultural issue. These include Christianity and other religions, feminism, homosexuality, and the natural environment.
Even when covering familiar territory, Olson combines elements in a fresh way that yields helpful insights. It is recommended for anyone who seeks a deeper understanding of contemporary Christian thought.
