This book and "Tune In"

A very necessary and in depth reconstruction of the recordings the Beatles did from "Love Me Do"(single), "Please, Please Me" and "With The Beatles, plus the associated singles-"I Wanna Hold Your Hand", "She Loves You"/"I'll Get You", "From Me To You". and "Thank You Girl." This book, plus "Recording The Beatles", Lewisohn's books, "The Beatles recording Sessions" and "Tune In", should give all the info necessary for understanding and appreciating their recorded out put.
Obviously, tis is the first installment(although the author doesn't say so) of several in analyzing the Beatles recorded performances.
Whether this will include the BBC collections, Hollywood Bowl etc. i don't know. But, this is a good start.

Fantastic approach and great detail for the music to come out of The Beatles early EMI releases

As the title implies, the book is the first in a series that will cover the Beatles’ studio years from 1962-70, with this first book covering the first 5 singles (“Love Me Do,” “Please Please Me,” From Me To You,” “She Loves You” and “I Want To Hold Your Hand”) and first two albums (Please Please Me & With The Beatles). Anthony gives us a complete chapter for each of the 34 tracks The Beatles recorded and released during this period and discusses mainly The Beatles playing techniques and what was innovative about them for the time. While The Beatles recorded many covers during this period, you will have a better feel after reading Anthony’s book just how differently The Beatles played them and made them their own.
There are plenty of books out there that cover the success of The Beatles and their music. With this book's approach Anthony focuses more on details that musicians will be interested in such as chord progressions, drumming styles and vocal techniques, he keeps it at a level that those of us who are not musicians will understand too. The end result is an even further appreciation of the growth and talent of The Beatles during their early years that would only continue to develop over the remainder of the sixties.
I enjoyed the book thoroughly and look forward to the others in the series.

This guy knows his stuff.His being a musician himself is all over the pages....and that's a big plus.A musician myself,though,I felt put off by his chord referencing and his numerizing of each song.Yes,music is viewable as a "mathematical construct",as in jazz and classical music,and ,when writing of it,can be referenced that way but I felt the warmth and soul of The Beatles' music was compromised a bit by those references.Still,I learned much and,having read the other books that have focused on their songs,that is saying something.The author is to be praised for what he has done.
