About the Author
Sumter M. Carmichael, M.D. is a board certified psychiatrist living in Birmingham, Alabama. Before pursuing her psychiatric career, Dr. Carmichael graduated from Stanford University with honors in mathematics and attended Cornell University Medical College in New York City. Following a medical internship with Tinsley Harrison in Birmingham, Alabama, she did research at the Cardiovascular Research Center in Birmingham and the Virginia Heart Lab in Charlottesville, Va. Following a residency in psychiatry in Birmingham, she studied for seven years with a Freudian Analyst and seven years with a Jungian Analyst, both in Alabama. After being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, she went into private practice where she worked closely with the Pastoral Counseling Center at the Baptist Medical Center at Montclair. There she did individual, family and group therapy while continuing to teach medical students in Pharmacology and then Medicine. In 1990, she began working with medical patients at the local county hospital, Cooper Green where she taught medical students and young doctors on their rotation in Medicine. This culminated in founding a multi-disciplinary pain clinic for the poor, called the Endorphin Clinic, to reflect the importance of the healing that comes from within. Observing the disconnect between what is known about pain, depression, anxiety, opiates, and addiction, and what is expected by patients but meted out by doctors, she retired in 2006 to work on her book about chronic pain and its relationship to anxiety and depression.

Returning to good health

Although I have been reluctant to review my own wife's books, I do think it is appropriate that I give my personal testimonial of what her advice has meant to me. About two years ago I was overweight and suffering from back and hip pain and having surgery and steroid shots to get relief. I was beginning to believe that I no longer could live an active life. But I began to follow her advice about how to recover. Now that I have lost considerable weight and have begun to exercise regularly, I no longer need the medicines I was taking before. At the age of 73 I am swimming 700-800 yards several times a week, gardening, and even playing tennis again! If you or someone you care for needs to find out how to recover, I heartily recommend this book and its companion volume, HEAL: A PSYCHIATRIST'S INSPIRING STORY...

Dr Carmichael is a graduate of Stanford and Cornell Medical College. She has been a practicing psychiatrist and has directed a hospital based chronic pain clinic. She has experienced the emotional and chronic physical pain from dealing with her own illness
of chronic multiple sclerosis. She has shared her own struggles and journey to find peace and healing from the ravages of MS.
Sumter is compassionate Psychiatrist who has been actively involved in health care , mental health, and the management of chronic pain for forty years. She has also suffered from chronic pain and MS herself. Her book gives the reader an incredibly practical, scientific based,
vulnerable, honest , and deep understanding of the experience and the approach to managing depression and chronic pain. Only someone who has suffered and also dedicated her life to a solution can bridge the gap between patient and doctor. This is a very basic HOW TO practical approach on managing chronic pain.
HEAL THYSELF is truly a first hand experience of her own life and her search for solutions.
I think Dr Carmichael's wholistic and comprehensive approach is valid and much needed in an area where the health care system has failed to provide available and responsible care. We live in a culture that denies and distracts us from honoring and addressing chronic physical and emotional pain. I hope everyone can find hope and relief from their pain in this well crafted book.

The author of this valuable resource of solutions had to find her own way through the many topics that she shares herein just to get through the day. As a teacher of young doctors, she also set an example of professionalism and compassion. In a tone that is never dictatorial or invasive, she quietly offers a buffet of methods to help you cope with the challenges you may face.
